Fighting Covid with Cannabis • Dr. Igor Kovalchuck

Fighting Covid with Cannabis • Dr. Igor Kovalchuck

Dr. Igor Kovalchuck is a cannabis researcher from Canada whose team is developing sativa extracts that block the ACE2 receptor that covid-19 uses as an entryway into the cell. They use artificial human 3D models of oral, airway, and intestinal tissues to identify extracts that modulate ACE2 gene expression and ACE2 protein levels.

We’ll discuss using cannabis to fight covid-19, as well as other diseases like cancer that
marijuana has shown promising results in fighting. The stigma around weed, a frequent topic in
these parts, has blocked and slowed down this research and Dr. Kovalchuck will share his first
hand experience dealing with the bizarre logic of weed laws in Canada and the US.

In a wonderfully unexpected digression we will also delve into Chernobyl and Igor’s time there as a researcher studying plant life in the aftermath of the nuclear meltdown. We’ll also get the inside scoop on the supplements Igor’s team is currently testing and when they might be available to American and Canadian consumers.

    Poop Doping • Scott Pemberton

    Poop Doping • Scott Pemberton

Why is it when I eat halal food with white sauce and hot sauce from a street cart in Manhattan, within a half hour my stomach starts bubbling?

There is still so much we don’t know about our bodies, and perhaps nowhere is that more true than in our guts, where literally millions of species of bacteria live out their entire lives and procreate endlessly.

    The Vaccine Race**

The US Government subsidies which funded the development of covid vaccines.

    **CONTENT NOTE:

This episode was recorded in mid-2020. A LOT of information has changed regarding covid-19 and vaccine efficacy. Do not take everything we say here as current news, but instead as a time-capsule of two people's speculation about the future in time of the unknown. You can listen now and enjoy the knowledge we so desperately needed at this time.

Human Behavior using Game Theory • Kyle Thomas

Human Behavior using Game Theory • Kyle Thomas

In the very first episode of the series, host Ian Mark is talking to Kyle Thomas, the Chief Scientist at MotiveMetrics.

They’ll offer an introduction to evolutionary psychology which attempts to explain useful mental and psychological traits—such as memory, perception, or language.

We also get a look into their shared experience of working together for Steven Pinker at Harvard University.

Why do people ask if you want to come in for drink at the end of a date, if they really mean would you like to have sex? -- We’ll get to the bottom of it in this episode.

Why do we blush if we get caught talking about someone? -- We don’t have the data, but we’ll discuss the Game Theory logic behind it.

What is Common Knowledge? Kyle will give us a lot of examples. He’ll also discuss paid search ads.

We even talk about Trump and the unknowns of the pandemic for a few minutes, because this episode was recorded in mid-2020. 😬

As the Cannabis takes hold, there is plenty of speculation on all of this and much more in this week's episode of Stoned Studies!
