May is mental health awareness month and also this May 16th would have been my mom’s 70th birthday. May is also the month of Mother’s Day and New York City –especially in Central Park which she just loved– bursts with color and life in May after a long, cold winter. All of this is to say that I’ve been thinking a lot about my mom the past few weeks and decided to share with you an updated version of her story. In it, I share about my mom's
Manic episode that led to her first hospitalization and diagnosis of Schizoaffective Disorder Experience within the conventional mental healthcare system for over three years Experience on antipsychotics, antidepressants and mood stabilizer drugs, and her subsequent death by suicide The written version of this episode is here: https://getwellbe.com/inspiration/mental-health-patient-advocacy
Have you had a similar experience with mental illness for yourself or a loved one? Please feel free to share it in the comments at the bottom of the article page. I know this stuff is deeply personal and traumatic but I believe only in all of us all sharing our truths, will real change and healing ever truly happen.
