Straight Ahead - The Omni-American Podcast Greg Thomas & Aryeh Tepper

Harvard Divinity School professor Terrence Johnson recalls a lifetime of relationships with Jewish people and engages in a captivating discussion with co-hosts Aryeh Tepper and Greg Thomas about Black-Jewish relations. Johnson and the hosts explore whether shared vulnerability can serve as grounds for a renewed relationship as well as the tensions, for some, stemming from the Israel-Palestine conflict. As a man of the left, Johnson asks: How do we use a history of struggle and received religious tradition to fight the power of empire? As co-directors of the Omni-American Future Project, the hosts challenge Johnson's characterization of Jews as "white."

Economist and public intellectual Glenn Loury engages in a vigorous conversation with hosts Greg Thomas and Aryeh Tepper over the utility of economics as a discipline in human endeavor; deracialization as a prelude to transracial humanism; and the bias vs. development narrative as related to the experience and legacy of Afro-Americans and Jewish American. Passions arise, as each brings depth to their arguments, especially concerning whether transcending race is possible or feasible and the generative lessons that Black Americans and Jewish Americans can learn from each other, and the implications for Americans and the West overall.

In this special episode of “Straight Ahead: The Omni-American Podcast,” co-hosts Aryeh Tepper and Greg Thomas discuss Hamas’ Oct. 7th assault on Aryeh’s southern Israeli town of Ofaqim. Aryeh shares stories of real-time heroism from his family and community and provides essential information for understanding how the attack fits into the larger regional war between the forces of Islamic tolerance and Islamist intolerance. Tepper and Thomas affirm the values of civilization against barbarism, while Tepper concludes by pointing to the price that Israel's government paid for allowing political loyalty to trump considerations of competence, let alone excellence.
