    OUT OF THE SILENT PLANET

    OUT OF THE SILENT PLANET

Ben and Steve explore Mars via C.S. Lewis’ science fiction novel, the first book in his celebrated “Space Trilogy”, Out of the Silent Planet.

Published in 1938, Out of the Silent Planet is the story of a man, Ransom, who is kidnapped and taken to Mars and thrust into an adventure he never wanted. In the process, he meets alien intelligences and gains and new understanding about a spiritual cosmology.

C.S. Lewis is one of Ben and Steve’s favorite authors, and with his mix of Christianity and science fiction and imagination, this series of books is perhaps the best fit for discussion on a podcast like Strangers and Aliens . . .

Coming soon . . . episodes finishing the trilogy with Perelandra and That Hideous Strength and an episode about the controversial book fragment The Dark Tower.

    KING KONG (1933) Road Trip

    KING KONG (1933) Road Trip

“From the vault,” so to speak, this episode is actually a couple months old and was the last movie Ben saw before theaters closed down.

King Kong (1933) was a movie that changed everything and the results are still being felt today. It’s been seen on TV and on DVD and on VHS, but every once in a while it makes its way to its original format – being on the big screen. In this episode, Ben takes a road trip to see this beloved movie.

The audio is not the greatest. Ben was trying out a new way to record and it did not work well.

THE STARLOST, LOST IN SPACE, and SWORD ART ONLINE (Pilot Season Series)

THE STARLOST, LOST IN SPACE, and SWORD ART ONLINE (Pilot Season Series)

Pilot Season – when studios create the first episode of a new show and shop it around in hopes that a network will pick up the series for a full season . . .

For us, it’s a fun exercise in checking out a new series and exposing ourselves to some new (old) sci-fi TV!

Each host has selected a pilot episode from a TV show. Could be a successful one, could be a failed one. The only rules: it has to fit into the sci-fi/fantasy realm, it has to be a pilot (in other words it was intended as the first episode of a TV series), and it has to be something of interest.

Then we will discuss: Based on what we see, would we order a series of this show? What potential does the show have based on this pilot? What actually happened to the show? Do we personally want to continue watching?

    Our selections for this episode:

THE STARLOST – a Canadian production of a sci-fi concept by Harlan Ellison featuring some basically Amish people on a giant spaceship

LOST IN SPACE – the original pilot, sans robot and Dr. Smith, which featured a very different concept from the resulting series

SWORD ART ONLINE – an anime series about a devastating development in a virtual reality game, and the newest series of this episode by far

Those were Ben, Steve, and Evan’s picks. The pilot episode has been created for each of these series, it will they get ordered for a pick up?

With a great cast of hosts you will get various opinions on all kinds of different aspects of science fiction(books, movies, video games, etc). Also, since this podcast is run by some very cool Christian men there are some great episodes about how faith and science fiction work together. Definitely an awesome podcast for the entire family!

Great chemistry between the hosts and I love the Christian approach to sci-fi and fantasy. As a Christian raised in a conservative home, I always thought there was something wrong with me for liking fantastical stories, places, and creatures. Now I realize that the fantastical is not to be feared but enjoyed! Thank you guys for redeeming this area of storytelling!
