Watching THE ESCAPE ROOM Franchise with John Harju
John Harju is back and that means we’re talking about horror . . . or at least suspense thriller . . . and for this episode that means we’re talking about the “not-quite-Saw-but almost” franchise, or at least the “higher-budget-Cube” franchise: Escape Room, consisting of Escape Room and Escape Room: Tournament of Champions.
Jackie Brown’s Four Loves: An exploration of the characters and relationships of Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown through C.S. Lewis’ The Four Loves – S&A367
A few years back, Ben had the chance to write an essay for the book “Tarantino And Theology” (edited by Jonathan and Jerry Walls). The result was a chance for Ben to dive into his favorite Tarantino movie, Jackie Brown, and dive into a book by his favorite author, C.S. Lewis.
Now, in 2021, with so many different things going on in this summer making it difficult to do the podcasting thing, Ben thought he’d pull out this old essay and present an audio version.
If you liked this episode and this essay or are a fan of Tarantino and theology, you should definitely check out the actual book (you can get it through Amazon here: TARANTINO AND THEOLOGY) because it features essays that are much better than Ben’s.
SHADOW and SUBSTANCE 2: "Probe 7 Over and Out" and "The Self-Improvement of Salvadore Ross"
We continue our series about THE TWILIGHT ZONE (that started in 2013 . . . and only has one other episode in the series) by covering two season five episodes of the show: “Probe 7 Over and Out” and “The Self-Improvement of Salvadore Ross”.
These episodes were chosen by Steve and Evan and one of these episodes is Ben’s absolute least favorite TZ episode. He detests it.
But there is a lot to talk about in these two episodes of this classic TV series, including: shaggy God stories; short form storytelling; Bible stories in fiction; and classic sci-fi short stories.
Join the team as they enter into a realm of shadow and substance . . . the Twilight Zone!
The first episode in the series: SHADOW and SUBSTANCE: Twilight Zone Episodes “Nick of Time” and “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” — Ep. 94
"Cold Equations" by X-Minus 1 and STOWAWAY by Netflix
This episode is why we created Strangers and Aliens! In this episode we:
* Explore a classic sci-fi story (“The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin)!* Review a new sci-fi movie (STOWAWAY, on Netflix now – don’t worry, we’re spoiler free about the movie . . . although the movie’s inspirations may spoil the movie . . .)!* Talk about Star Trek (specifically, “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one”)!* Play an old time radio episode from X-Minus One!* Talk about the philosophical morality thought experiment “Trolley Problem”!* Talk about Bible stories related to the sci-fi stories!* Talk about Biblical concepts related to the stories!* Have fun doing it!
Epic Stories from the Bible that Should Be Movies
Evan, Steve, and Ben take a look at some of their favorite stories that should be big budget motion pictures, and in the process explore some of their favorite stories . . . and there just may be a couple new projects that come out of this . . .
GODZILLA VS. KONG Review
Ben and Steve are joined by frequent guest host Nathan Marchand to battle each other about how good Godzilla Vs. Kong was! Where did they watch it? (At the BOX OFFICE, or the HOME Box Office???) Did they like it? Which one are they: team Godzilla or team Kong?
And what did Evan think? He had enough strong feelings that he sent in some of his thoughts!

Christianity meets Sci-fi
This is a great podcast for anyone who loves science fiction. With a great cast of hosts you will get various opinions on all kinds of different aspects of science fiction(books, movies, video games, etc). Also, since this podcast is run by some very cool Christian men there are some great episodes about how faith and science fiction work together. Definitely an awesome podcast for the entire family!
Great, balanced, intelligent and interesting discussions.
Great chemistry between the hosts and I love the Christian approach to sci-fi and fantasy. As a Christian raised in a conservative home, I always thought there was something wrong with me for liking fantastical stories, places, and creatures. Now I realize that the fantastical is not to be feared but enjoyed! Thank you guys for redeeming this area of storytelling!
