Q&A: Muppet Whistles, Throat Singing & Steely Dan

    Mailbag! Episode!
We've got questions about Tuvan throat singing (how does it work??), the Unsolved Mysteries theme (why is it so creepy??), the intro to Don McLean's "American "Pie" (how do they count it??), Steely Dan (why do some people hate them??), Andrew Bird's whistling solo from 2011's The Muppets (how did he do that??), Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" (what key is it in??), and more.
    DISCUSSED ON THIS EPISODE:
“Unsolved Mysteries Theme” composed by Gary Malkin and Michael Boyd “Halloween Theme” by John Carpenter “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd from Second Helping, 1973 “Yuve Yuve Yu” by The Hu, 2018 “Chylandyk” by Huun-Huur-Tu, 1997 “The One I’m Waiting For” by Relient K from MMHMM, 2004 “The Breton Kingdom / Rouantelezh Vreizh” by Alan Stivell from Before Landing, 1977 “American Pie” by Don Mclean from American Pie, 1971 “The Squeaky Wheel” by The Dear Hunter from Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise, 2015 “Be My Baby” as recorded by The Ronettes, 1963 “Janie Runaway” by Steely Dan from Two Against Nature, 2000 “Lingala” by the SF Jazz Collective from their self-titled 2005 album “Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk” by The New Pornographers from Together, 2010 “The Whistling Caruso” by Andrew Bird from The Muppets, 2011 OUTRO SOLOIST: Luke Price
This episode's outro soloist is the wonderful Portland fiddle player Luke Price. When he's not working as a side man in a variety of killer bands, Luke joins his wife Rachael to form the excellent songwriting duo DEAN!. They've got a new album coming soon and it's gonna be pretty great; in the meantime you can follow them on Instagram and listen to some of their stuff on their website, wearedean.com.

"No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age

"No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age

It's time for a journey of the mind, as Kirk picks apart one of the best hard rock tunes of the early 2000s.
Queens of the Stone Age's "Songs for the Deaf" includes enough bangers that it was tough to pick a single song to focus on, but in the end, "No One Knows" won the day with its combination of grit, groove, and focus. On this episode, Kirk dives deep into the tune's tightly wound, surprisingly swinging arrangement, with special focus on Dave Grohl's meticulous drumming.

"4'33" by John Cage (Twenty Thousand Hertz)

"4'33" by John Cage (Twenty Thousand Hertz)

It seemed pretty unlikely that Strong Songs would ever cover John Cage's infamous "silent" composition "4'33", so we figured, on this off-week, it'd be fun to run an episode of the fabulous podcast Twenty Thousand Hertz on the subject instead.
(Also, Kirk and 20KHz host Dallas Taylor like one another's shows and decided to do a little cross promotion.)
This episode originally ran on January 22, 2020, and the full show notes and credits are below. You can find out more about Twenty Thousand Hertz at the show's website, https://www.20k.org.
This is a really cool podcast episode. Hope you dig it!
ORIGINAL 20KHz SHOW NOTES (Aired 01/22/2020)
This episode was written and produced by Martin Zaltz Austwick.

John Cage was a respected composer when, in 1952, he created his “silent piece”, 4’33’’ - a piece that would have the music world scratching their heads. This episode asks whether 4’33’’ is really “silent”, and we explore the history of a piece musicians still talk about today - and speak to the man who campaigned to get it to the top the British charts in 2010. Featuring composers Kyle Gann and Nahre Sol, and artist Dave Hilliard.

"World 1-1" from Super Mario Bros.

"World 1-1" from Super Mario Bros.

Classic video game consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System didn't just play games; they also played music. Their onboard synthesizers put strict limits on what kinds of music game composers could write, but from those limits came a cornucopia of musical themes that remain iconic even today.
On this episode, Kirk peels back the layers of Koji Kondo's  "World 1-1" music from the first Super Mario Bros., revealing a perfectly polished musical gem.

    "Satisfied" from Hamilton (Updated!)

    "Satisfied" from Hamilton (Updated!)

A toast to the groom! To the bride! To knowing you'll always regret the sacrifice you made for your sister!
In this updated 2019 episode, Kirk takes a dive into Lin-Manuel Miranda's epic Broadway musical Hamilton, focusing on Renée Elise Goldsberry's first act showstopper, "Satisfied."
Regret tinges an otherwise joyous day as Angelica Schuyler remembers the night she met Alexander Hamilton, fell in love with him, and quickly realized they could never be together. It's a heady mix of complex rhyme schemes, powerhouse vocals, and musical character motifs so densely interwoven that it's hard to keep track of them all.
(Note: This is an updated version of an episode that originally ran on May 1, 2019. It includes a new intro and outro, a couple of small editing tweaks, the show's current theme music, a new aside about Angelica's introduction to Alexander, and some added mentions of Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton's fabulous musical director.)

    "Kiss" by Prince

    "Kiss" by Prince

You don't have to be beautiful, rich, OR cool to appreciate Prince - you just need a little extra time, a pair of ears, and a pulse.
It's finally time to talk about the Purple One on Strong Songs, specifically his 1986 chart-topper "Kiss." How did a song that was originally written for a standard band become so stripped-down and distinct? Why do those vocal and guitar parts work so well? And who was responsible for some of the sounds and styles Prince was channeling when he recorded it?
All that and more, on this episode.

I’m not a musician

It is really fascinating to hear someone really analyze a song and break it down to the point where you you not only have a better understanding of why the song is so good, but also why you love it as you do. Kirk’s analysis is very accessible to those of us with no real musical knowledge and his enthusiasm is contagious on songs you may not know real well.

His episode on Hamilton is amazing, but be sure to check out other episodes as well. I recommend Kiss and Like a Prayer episodes particularly, but they’re all good.

Wow

I’ve only listened to one episode so far but it was the most amazing 50 minutes of music nerdery. Can’t wait to start digging into the rest of the episodes!

Great Podcast but ...

That cheesy intro music is so off putting. In a podcast that is otherwise so insightful and informative about music, how does the host not realize what a terrible introduction that terrible theme is? It’s part “hold” music, part 90s era weather channel, all awful. If you want horns, at least give us some cool jazz, something with life, not soulless light FM smooth jazz.

Once you get past the intro its a fantastic podcast!
