Overcoming Feelings of Grief if You Aren't Able to Breastfeed or Chestfeed (w/Amy Brown)

Overcoming Feelings of Grief if You Aren't Able to Breastfeed or Chestfeed (w/Amy Brown)

We are talking about grief and trauma when breastfeeding or chestfeeding just doesn’t work out the way we thought it would.

My guest is Professor Amy Brown, author of The Positive Breastfeeding Book and Why Breastfeeding Grief and Trauma Matter. She joins me to discuss grief, trauma, why it happens, and what we can do to prevent it or heal from it.

Learn More about Dr. Amy Brown

Professor Amy Brown is based at Swansea University in the UK where she leads the new research centre ‘LIFT’: Lactation, Infant Feeding and Translation. As a psychologist, Amy’s research explores the importance of pregnancy and the first year postpartum, focusing on how we can better support parents with infant feeding, understanding and caring for their baby and their own mental health. Amy has over 100 academic publications and is author to soon to be nine early parenting books focusing on infant feeding, parenting and mental health.

Continuing Nursing When You Don't Produce Enough Milk (w/Kaia Lacy)

Continuing Nursing When You Don't Produce Enough Milk (w/Kaia Lacy)

Hey it's Kelly Carvell, welcome to the very first episode of my rebranded podcast: The Lactation Nerd Podcast. Quick question for you, when you were getting prenatal care, did you receive a breast or chest assessment from your provider to check for any risk factors that could complicate your lactation journey? My guess would be that you did not, as most of us don't. It's not standard practice, at least not here in the U.S., but it really needs to be.

There are a few markers your provider, or lactation consultant, can look for that could mean you may struggle to produce milk. Knowing prenatally you have low supply indicators could save a baby’s life, a new parent’s sanity, and give them the opportunity to get comfortable with a combo feeding plan if they would still like to partially provide their milk if they don’t end up producing enough. Sadly, many, like my guest Kaia Lacy, don’t find out until it is much too late.

    Meet my guest:
Kaia is a motherhood blogger whose focus is infant-feeding with chronic low milk supply, advocating for more low-supply education and research, and family support. She was diagnosed with insufficient glandular tissue (IGT) following the birth of her first child and has since committed herself to amplify the experiences and supporting families like hers. Kaia is currently pursuing a Lactation Counselor Certification through the Healthy Children Project.

Relevant, informative, evidence-based podcast for breastfeeding mothers

This podcast helps mothers who are breastfeeding addressing a variety of issues, concerns, topics that are relevant. She has some guests that are very informative and helpful! I especially felt like the recent episode about intimacy because it is a topic that I think most new moms experience. I highly recommend this podcast to all breastfeeding moms!
