In Acts 13, an ordinary church in Antioch discovers exactly what that "something more" looks like — a Spirit-sent mission that carries the gospel from a Roman proconsul in Cyprus to a synagogue in Asia Minor, and eventually, down through two thousand years, to us.     The God of Great Reversals Ruth 4 Teacher: Pastor Tommy Bailey Date: July 26, 2026 Is history going somewhere, or is it just moving along like a boat without a rudder? Most of us never say the question out loud, but it surfaces when life turns out differently than we hoped. It surfaces when suffering becomes personal. The book of Ruth arrives in the days when the judges ruled, a time of corruption and injustice when there was no king in the land and everyone did what was right in their own eyes. It also arrives at a time of great loss for a family far from home in Moab. The entire book of Ruth responds to that question with a costly redemption at the city gate and a baby born in Bethlehem. Join Pastor Tommy as we finish our four-week series in Ruth and consider the God of great reversals. Boaz binds himself to a family that had lost nearly everything, at a cost the law never required him to pay. Naomi, who came home empty and asked to be called bitter, is now holding a precious grandson. Ruth, who had carried the name of an enemy nation like a scarlet letter, is honored and blessed as member of the family. This is God's specialty, and what happens in that little town is only a shadow of the greater reversal it points to in Jesus.     Redemption at the Threshing Floor Ruth 3 Teacher: Pastor Tom Yarbrough Date: July 19, 2026 So far in our study of Ruth, we have seen the emptiness of Naomi in the loss of her husband and sons, the steadfast “hesed” love of Ruth toward Naomi, and the deep admiration that Boaz has for Ruth’s character. Throughout the narrative, we have had hints of a coming restoration for this suffering family and it’s clear that the unseen hand of Yahweh is working in the shadows, in spite of what might appear to be happenstance. Chapter 3 finds Ruth embarking on a risky night mission to the threshing floor of Boaz with the singular aim of redemption for herself and Naomi.     Providence in a Field of Barley Ruth 2 Teacher: Pastor Matt Pierson Date: July 12, 2026 In Ruth chapter 1, we follow the story of Naomi, a woman who has moved with her husband and sons to the land of Moab to escape a famine in Bethlehem. At the end of chapter 1, Naomi, having lost her husband and both sons, returns to Bethlehem along with her daughter-in-law Ruth. In the second chapter of Ruth, the women are back in Bethlehem, just as the barley harvest begins. Despite the obstacles of being a widow, desperately poor, and a foreigner, Ruth rolls up her sleeves and sets out to work in the barley fields. Join Pastor Matt as we study through the second chapter of Ruth and observe how God is working behind the scenes, guiding Ruth to the barley fields of Boaz, a wealthy and worthy man who also happens to be a kinsman of Naomi, of the clan of Elimilech, Naomi’s husband. As the chapter unfolds, we see how God does extraordinary things in ordinary ways through ordinary people.     Returning Home Ruth 1 Teacher: Pastor Tommy Bailey Date: July 5, 2026 The book of Ruth is a quiet story tucked between the tumultuous period of the Judges and the rise of Israel’s kings. In the first chapter of Ruth, a famine drives a small family from Bethlehem, the house of bread, into Moab, a pagan land far from the presence and promises of God. There, in a country that was never home, Naomi loses her husband and both of her sons, and is left with her grief, two widowed daughters-in-law, and a longing to return home. Join Pastor Tommy as we open Ruth 1 and follow Naomi and Ruth on the road back to Bethlehem. In her season of loss, Naomi hears that God has visited his people, and she sets her face toward home. Ruth, a Moabite who had every reason to stay behind, clings to Naomi: “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” Underneath all the sorrow and lament, God is quietly at work, moving toward this grieving family with a steadfast, covenant love that will not let go, making a way for the weary and the wandering to come home.     Always Within Reach Acts 12 Teacher: Dr. Phillip Nation Date: June 28, 2026 God always has us within reach. Neither the suffering inflicted by the world nor our prideful sin can separate us from His sovereign rule. In every instance of life, God is at work even though it may seem to be “behind the scenes.” The work of God in all circumstances happens by His providential interventions, through the spiritual realm of angelic work, and by inviting us to join via our own obedient actions. God is close to the righteous so that they are afforded peace, answered prayer, and involvement into His mission. Tragically, for the prideful and the lost, God’s nearness will result in their judgment. Acts 12 teaches us that both those persecuted for righteousness and those who are arrogant in their self-sufficiency are equally under God’s sovereign rule and will experience His power in one way or another.     A Distinct Accent Acts 11:19-30 Teacher: Pastor Tommy Bailey Date: June 21, 2026 In Acts 11:19-30, the gospel reaches Syrian Antioch, the third-largest city in the ancient world. Believers scattered by persecution arrived, speaking the name of Jesus, and the hand of the Lord was with them. Something about their words and their lives set them apart, a spiritual accent the city had never heard. Their way of life was so unusual that the pagan city of Antioch had no category for them. Likely as a derogatory term, believers were called Christiansfor the first time. Join Pastor Tommy as we consider what made this young church so unique: what they said, how they lived, and who they turned to. These believers were so captured by Jesus that their whole way of life pointed to another home.
