In Appalachia, life’s path is filled with signs. Signs may signal a coming event – a birth, a disaster, a death. Or, they may compel us to take precautionary actions. Or, they may guide us in everyday activities: weather and planting signs have guided farmers since they first crossed the Appalachian Mountains. Who is to say where a keen understanding of the natural world ends and superstition begins? The following playlist is a small sampling of the superstitions and signs found in the collections of the Archives of Appalachia.
