All Hands on Deck with Will Sofrin

Will Sofrin is an artist, a writer, a designer, a builder, a sailor and aspiring surfer. At a young age, Will enrolled in an apprenticeship at International Yacht Restoration School of Technology & Trades to learn how to build and restore wooden yachts. As an apprentice, he studied the mechanics of wooden boats and naval architecture, where eventually he became a professional sailor, using his specialized wood-working skillset to secure positions on the yachts and ships that I would sail throughout Europe, New England, the Caribbean, Central America, and the California coast. He is a licensed captain but eventually went on to become an expert in product development. He will be launching his new book soon, All Hands on Deck, The final voyage of the American Tall Ship, Rose and other seafaring tales. He is our guest on this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio.

Why We Swim with Bonnie Tsui

Why We Swim with Bonnie Tsui

Bonnie Tsui was born in Queens, New York, and raised on Long Island. She has been a competitive swimmer, rower, climber, snowboarder, surfer, an author of multiple books and has won numerous awards and accolades. One of her more recent books, “Why We Swim” celebrates the role water has played throughout history and across the globe. It covers everything from Olympic champions, a Baghdad swim club that meets in Saddam Hussein’s former palace pool, modern-day Japanese samurai swimmers, and even an Icelandic fisherman who somehow survives a wintry six-hour swim after a shipwreck and becomes a national hero. She has also just released “Sarah and the Big Wave: The True Story of the First Woman to Surf Mavericks,” a new children’s book that tells the story of the legendary Sarah Gerhard and her journey to becoming one of the first female surfers at Mavericks. Bonnie is our guest on this episode and what follows is a fascinating conversation. We hope you enjoy…

    Sandy Ordille: Pioneer, Archivist, Inspiration

    Sandy Ordille: Pioneer, Archivist, Inspiration

In the annals of surfing history, Sandy Ordille is an extremely important figure. For not only did she participate in making it, but she has made it her life's work to document, preserve & highlight women surfers whose narratives have been long overlooked. Sandy has lived an incredibly impressive life as a pioneer and founding member of professional surfing. She was there at the inception of the IPS pro tour, where she traveled the world on a shoestring budget, competing and breaking new ground. In 2016, she was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame and then in 2017, The New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame. In another life, Sandy played in the all female band, Avant Garage in the late 80’s early 90’s when all female bands were the rarity. In short, Sandy is a revolutionary, a groundbreaker, and has most definitely led the charge for women’s equality both in and out of the water. Sandy is a native Ocean City, NJ and is our guest on this week’s episode of Swell Season Surf Radio.

The Many Lives of Pat Conlon

The Many Lives of Pat Conlon

Patrick Conlon is your quintessential New Yorker. He’s a smart talking, street walking surfer, artist, marketer, and former owner of the legendary Epstein’s Bar in the lower east side. He’s as OG Rockaway as they get. He grew up in the 80’s on a steady diet of surfing the Rocks and sneaking into punk shows. Pat’s lived many lives. He chased his surf passion and went to university at USC, started an industry surf zine, came back to NYC and worked as an editor at Spin during its heyday. He went on to be a marketing person for some of the major brands at their peak, such as, Quiksilver, Volcom, Vans, Supra & Kr3w apparel. He’s worked for incredible artists such as Tom Sach’s and is now producing his own iconic work. Pat is quick witted, charming, and charismatic. He’s always got a smart response with a twist of humor. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. So hold on because it’s a zig zagging ride that tells a story of one of Rockaways most beloved surfers. We hope you enjoy…

    The Optimist: Greg Wachsteter

    The Optimist: Greg Wachsteter

Greg Wachsteter isn’t known for his fancy surfing or contributions to the surf industry. But… Greg is one of the most disciplined surfers I know. I have frequently woken up early for many dawn patrol sessions out in Montauk, only to see Greg paddling back as the sun is just rising over the horizon, already with an hour under his belt. His quote on his Instagram is “choose to be optimistic, it feels better “. Greg is a successful trader, one of the principles at Watermill Trading, a father, husband and no doubt brings his zeal into all aspects of his life. He also started Black Pool Coffee Roasters as a side project to do with his son. He bounces from NYC to Montauk weekly and never seems to be low on energy. He practices mindfulness and we get into some powerful conversation about mental health, living a purposeful life, and maintaining presence. He is our guest on this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio and this is a not to miss episode.

Great podcast!

I am really loving these podcasts. Great guests and local Long Island lore. Looking forward to future episodes! I’d love to hear more from Long Island surf legends about the history of New York surfing. My only constructive criticism is that the sound volume is very low on the recordings. The volume in my car is pinned so that if I forget and switch to music I’m going to blow my speakers. Please up the volume and get those guests up to the mic. Keep up the great work.
