This dark, gothic fantasy campaign takes place in the shadowy city of Strova, a place of shady nobles and desperate souls, where paranoia and misguided zealotry have twisted men into monsters. Into this haunted land are thrust our heroes: noble swordswoman Rozina (played by Sword of Nerdom co-founder Celeste), trash-rag journalist and social paraiah Tizi (played by Katie), unstable meat-cutter Murtaugh (played by Justin), and naive wannabe-paladin and hedgehog enthusiast Tristan (played by Anthony). These unlikely companions will attempt to survive monsters, curses, and a web of intrigue crawling with disreputable sorts supplied by host and Game Master Budd. Prepare your ear-holes and hold on to your hedgehogs, folks!

Most underrated actual play casts out there

This might not be for everyone. If you want a fantasy RPG that is more traditional where the elf ears are super pointy, monks fly around with giant S’s on their chest and level 0 commoners can over come daily problems with magic go ahead and move along now.

But for those of you that crave something more step inside. The Sword of Nerdom has crafted something special here. The world is a wonderful melting pot of mystery, macabre, and fantasy. The players play their very flawed characters very well. And I can’t say enough about Bud the GM. Great storytelling but he lets the players drive the action. He knows his world well enough to improvise all the while letting us discover the truths of the world with them.

Give this Podcast a shot they are certainly deserving of it.

Dark and perfect (and hilarious)

I love this podcast and can’t wait for the new episode every week.

The world has a focused, captivatingly dark, realism that most fantasy settings forego in favor of conventional fantasy plot devices.

Nothing in this world seems like an afterthought. NPCs have dimension and complexity - even their names are thoughtful and fit the world’s sociocultural structure. It also doesn’t hurt that the GM is a talented, creative, and enthusiastic voice actor (and very rarely mixes up voices!). I leave each time with a feeling that I’ve just scratched the surface of a much deeper mystery.

The all-human PC cast is diverse, and the 1:1 male:female ratio leads to some great dialog and a lends a very balanced feel to the story in general. The personalities are both complementary and hilarious. Rich backstory and well-paced character development uncovers the past and lends insight into the future of each character and NPC with each new installment, playing perfectly into my podcast addiction.

There’s much more to love about this podcast that I’ll add to this review as it comes to me.

The music is great and always gets me in the mood.
