Talk Heathen 04.26 2020-06-28 with Eric Murphy & Vi La Bianca

Greetings Heathens! Today’s episode of Talk Heathen is brought to you by, keep wearing your masks in public, stop being selfish and wear it! You could save a loved one. Our hosts today are the dynamic duo, Eric Murphy and Vi La Bianca.

Let’s get to calls. The “first” caller is a returning caller, Father John from Canada. He wants to talk about some loopholes in the Roman Catholic doctrine surrounding the sacrament of confirmation and that Roman Catholic theology was inaccurate and Eastern Orthodox is the One True Church, um ok. The No True Scotsman fallacy and circular arguments abound!

Next up, Brad from Virginia would like to talk about how his friend has very opposing views about LGBTQ marriage/legal rights and uses whataboutism to push a dialogue and agenda. He wonders how society makes these opinions and what to do about it.

Arthur in Poland would like to hear some recommendations on how to navigate relationships with his children and family about his atheism, deconversion. He wonders how to object to baptism in a faith. Don’t wait on it Arthur, we definitely recommend possibly speaking to a secular therapist/marriage counselor about your concerns.

Evan in Ohio is calling in as a deist and a recovering Baptist. He is calling in about his sister, who is struggling with her religion and self hate in regards to LGBTQ rights. It almost sounds like she may be projecting. Evan, you can’t push her along her journey, she must come to the conclusions herself. Be there for her, listen to her, and be available to her.

Next in the queue is Tom from Missouri. He wants to talk about the historical evidence of Jesus’ resurrection. This is a great call, definitely give it a listen, there are a lot of pearls of wisdom that I didn’t capture.

Billy in North Carolina would like to talk about how atheists need to figure out how to come together, mobilize, and become activists to highlight oppression against the non-religious. We must remain intersectional and accepting of others while doing this work.

That’s our show today folks, thanks all! Be safe and healthy out there!

Talk Heathen 04.25 2020-06-21 with Eric Murphy & Vi La Bianca

Good morning Heathens and Happy Father’s day to all you dads out there. I hope you all are having a great day so far. Vi and Eric are back and ready to take your calls.
Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Nindo from New York. Eric calls him a “Fan Favorite,” yikes LOL. This time Nindo thinks atheism is a worldview and has nothing to do with the truth. He’s coming in hot and Eric consistently tells him to calm down and answer his questions. He consistently doesn’t.
Next up, Hadi from North Carolina would like to continue to talk about faith and truth from the Muslim perspective. He called last week and it was a nice and refreshing conversation. Wonder how this time will go?
Michael in New York is next, wanting to talk about the definitions of faith and uses the analogy of fishing. Is this a gish/fish gallop?
Martin in Ecuador is confused. He wonders if Jesus really existed or if it was the Romans that created him. Eric breaks it down for him and provides a small history lesson.
Kevin in New York is up next, he is a returning caller usually calling with a plethora of different topics. Vi pins him down to staying on the topic that has been discussed before. He agrees to talk about Angels, Planet X/Wormwood, and Black Holes.
Dean in North Carolina has a question. How skeptical is too skeptical in regards to epistemology. Interesting question…
That’s our episode today folks, please continue to be safe out there. The world is definitely a better place with you in it. We are happy to be here for you and be a positive part of your world. See you all next week!

Talk Heathen 04.24 2020-06-14 with Vi La Bianca and Neil the 604 Atheist

Talk Heathen 04.24 2020-06-14 with Vi La Bianca and Neil the 604 Atheist

Good Morning Heathens, in today’s episode of Talk Heathen, Vi La Bianca is joined by the wonderful and gracious Neil the 604 Atheist. Neil hosts his own YouTube show (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOkKPs3juZb9iwFn7Z29-Lw/) and has had a plethora of fantastic guests talking about their own deconversion stories there. Check them out!

Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Rachel from Australia. How do atheists respond to the “No True Scotsman fallacy” when it’s used referring to us when/if we were christians? To them, a "real christian” is possibly just someone who hasn't stopped believing. If you stop believing, you never believed in the first place.

Next up, Hadisoufi from North Carolina would like to talk about how a functional “day-to-day” god could possibly exist and it works for him. Vi asks this question very pointedly: Why would you value a conception of god if you don’t necessarily believe in a true existing god?

Kevin in New York is calling again, this time with a hypothesis about scriptures of the bible, Jesus’ life, and the Peter principle. However, Vi would like to refresh us all on his progress on the pineal gland, wormwood, and Ouija boards, topics from previous calls with him. Vi also wonders about how Kevin comes up with these quite out of the ordinary hypotheses and questions. They give him a choice, talk about previous topics or the slew of new ones. Given the choice, Kevin decides to talk about the Peter Principle and Jesus’ life. Next time Peter, we will want to talk about your progress and will hold you to it. No ifs, ands, or buts allowed.

Michael in New York would like to discuss how DMT can “show” you the metaphysical world and can prove evidence for god. Claims it is repeatable and testable because of how the drug works and it’s mind altering properties. Neil jumps in to say it’s irrelevant due to societal imprints and hallucinations can not be truth. Ooooh, this call is fantastic.

Rick in Tennessee would like to talk about the ultimate self. He describes the ultimate self being “the us that we really are, our perception/essence in being, and not what is perceived of us.” He goes on to say: “This is sooo deep it’s shallow.” and “What I am at any given moment, at the moment of being, is essentially the ultimate self.”

Chad in Nebraska recently deconverted and wonders how to give up religious prayer. That’s a great question, you can absolutely continue to internally meditate and talk through things. It can continue to be helpful. Vi says it wonderfully: Deconstructing your religion can take time. There are things that linger, and that is ok.

That’s our show for today! Thanks to all essential workers and protesters fighting the good fight! See you all next week!

Talk Heathen 04.23 2020-06-07 with Eric Murphy & Rudy Bee(ExCultBaby)_0

Hello Heathens! Today’s episode of Talk Heathen is brought to you by just stay safe out there friends. Eric Murphy is joined by a dear friend, Rudy Bee (aka: EXCultBaby) Welcome Rudy!
The first caller is a returning caller, Nindo from New York. He is calling in to complain about his call and how he was perceived last week (and this week it seems.) He is refusing to recognize how his ideas and the way he provided them contributed to the way he was and is treated. Aw, poor baby.
Next up, Joseph from Nevada would like to talk about atheist forums and how he is seen as a troll on these forums. He claims he enjoys challenging atheist worldviews and also claims “all atheists are evolutionists.” He then attempts to discredit the scientific method, evolution, and take the Richard Dawkins quote about aliens out of context. This quote again. Sigh. Rudy said it best: “Your personal incredulity does not invalidate centuries of scientific research.”
Jesse would like to talk about answered prayer and miracles. Is there evidence for answered prayers? At what rate is it answered and can it be testable for evidence? Does it matter what or who one is praying to? Oh, it only works for Christians? Oof.
Ray is wondering if atheists and Christians can find common ground. I would love it if that were to happen, but I’d also love it if Christians didn’t use their personal beliefs to infringe on others’ rights.
Will in California would like to talk about the Unmoved Mover cosmological argument and Thomas Aquinas. There can't be an infinite regress: therefore God. Um, no. Here we go with the long-winded philosophy.
Toni is calling in talking about rough times and how to get through them once you leave faith. Seek out support groups, make friends, go to conferences, find your community online, and if you can’t find a community, start one! Iif you have the time, volunteer for Recovering from Religion’s hotline project. You are not alone. https://www.recoveringfromreligion.org & https://www.seculartherapy.org/
Andy is wondering how you can falsify nonbelief. What? Is there any basis or legitimacy to belief or nonbelief? It sounds like he is trying to falsify a negative and I’m not sure if that’s how it works. The conversation moves on to solipsism. BOY!
Kaitlyn is calling in about her journey and struggle getting out of religion. She is so close and Rudy recommends she read the bible without any preconceived notions and see how it really is. Kaitlyn, it takes time, you will stumble a bit and relearn some things, but it’s a journey. Best of luck to you!
And that’s our show today folks!

Talk Heathen 04.22 2020-05-31 with Eric MurphyVi La Bianca

Greetings all you Heathens! Today’s Talk Heathen is brought to you by, keep wearing masks and wash your damned hands. We are hosted today by Eric Murphy and Vi La Bianca, or as I like to call them, the dynamic duo.

Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Nindo from New York. He would like to discuss the possibility of a designer god. Sorry Eric, not a designer like Chanel or Louis Vuitton. But this call has all the fallacies: Appeals from authority, fine tuning, and solipsism oh my!
Next up, Joe from New York would like to talk about how he had been treated poorly by the atheist community online either in the comments for the shows (ooooof!) or by other internet show hosts. The call evolves into him asking about free will and also turns to the ‘no true Scotsman’ fallacy.

Father John from Canada is up next, he is an Eastern Orthodox Catholic and is calling in without a topic. Eric is excited and has a lot of questions about it. Starting with communal spoons in the time of COVID. “The transmission of COVID cannot happen in church…” Yikes, Father John affirmed that it can’t through the taking of communion and says it is against the faith to test the veracity of this claim.

The next caller in the queue is Caleb from Pennsylvania wanting to discuss what a good and healthy faith community looks like to atheists. As long as you don’t infringe upon others’ rights and are motivated by positive and not requiring folks to be manipulated into getting help or have prerequisite or conditional entry.

Thanks for tuning in and thank you to our essential workers, we are here for you. Please be safe and healthy out there, we as a community are better because you are in it. See you all next week.

Talk Heathen 04.21 2020-05-24 with Eric MurphyVi La Bianca

Greetings Heathens! In today’s episode of Talk Heathen, the dynamic duo are back together again, Eric Murphy and Vi La Bianca. Like a breath of fresh air, they bring to you another wonderful episode. Let’s do this!
Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Joe from Kansas. Joe is currently in a period of transition from theist to atheist, and has some lingering questions about belief in hell. Vi and Eric provide some gold standard advice in getting through this.
Tom in the UK is next, calling about how he as a theist can’t understand that life as we know it is the result of something random. Sounds like the watchmaker fallacy… Hmm.
Minh is calling once again, this time asking if we are ok with religion being viewed in a holistic way. Vi asks: Are there pragmatic reasons for being religious, like if it’s a good thing for one’s mental health and well being?
Ooooh, Rykis is calling in after being reincarnated a few times and says his soul is 3,000 years old. Also claims to be an indigo child, a past time traveler, and is here to change the world. This one is interesting. Ends the call wanting to promote his book, NOPE! Weee!
Next up, Dave in Toronto has an argument he’d like to share. He claims that using our overused and possibly bad linguistic habits can attribute agency and characteristics to current definitions. Basically redefining words such as saying the old word of nature is god. It’s an interesting concept, but not really utilized in the traditional sense of god. It doesn’t really compute. And I just wrote some word salad.
Marisa is needing advice about how she has been having an argument with their therapist about her deconversion. Her therapist is continually saying their deconversion is a choice. This bias (from a possible Christian worldview) could be clouding their counseling. This seems to me to be a red flag, I’d move onto a different therapist if possible. Definitely reach out to RFR and find a new therapist who will actually listen to you: https://www.recoveringfromreligion.org
Andrew is calling in, claims to stir up trouble in the churches he has attended. Likes to talk to atheists about science and factual events in the bible. He is looking to start a movement, is on a “monotheistic high,” and wants to unite people. He is all over the place and it’s tough to follow, but he is entertaining.
Our last caller of the day, Nick asks where do we draw the line at bad thoughts and protecting people from religion? Eric responds: “People are different from their beliefs, respect the person, dismantle or challenge the idea.”
Thanks for tuning in folks, please be safe and healthy. We need you around! See you all next week!

Love the Shoe

Eric has one of the most calm and relaxing voices ever. I listen to the podcast every week but I go back and listen to older ones when I am agitated because Eric has a way of relaxing my frazzled brain. Plus Vi is one of the most kind and understanding people I have ever heard speak. Vi has a way of relating to people I will never be able to.
