The 34 Virginia National Guard soldiers from Company A, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, based in the rural town of Bedford, suffered a tremendous loss on D-Day, with 20 of them losing their lives. This tragic event sparked a lasting impact on this small community, which later built the National D-Day Memorial to honor them.
