Mark James chats to the world's greatest magicians about the material in their shows. You have an audience of 200 people, perfect conditions, tell me what you do...
Usually I search the internet for already self written biographies (sometimes with hilarious 20 year old results, sorry Danny!) of the guest I've interviewed. It came as no surprise to me that Mark didn't have one. In the world he inhabits, his reputation is such that he doesn't need one!
In 2004 I was lucky enough to walk into JB Magic and find Mark Mason standing behind the counter. I didn't know that I was about to be treated to a performance by the greatest magic demonstrator alive. A statement that's as true now as it was then. Three years later I was entirely obsessed with magic and even found myself working behind the counter in that same store.
The years I spent working with Mark were easily some of the happiest in my life. I laughed more than I thought possible and learned more than I could ever say thank you for. Standing next to Mark making gimmicks or watching him demonstrate magic every day was really a gift. We talk about those days in great detail as well as Mark's beginnings as game operator turned magician.
We discuss the evolution of JB Magic as a physical store and all of his favourite routines for stand up and parlour shows.
I genuinely cannot tell you how thrilled I am to be able to bring you this chat. I hope you love it as much as I did.
I also recorded with Mark for my patreon page at www.patreon.com/markjamesmagician where we discussed the four performers he'd choose for his own magical variety show and Mark's love of silent film stars like Charlie Chaplin.
That chat is available RIGHT NOW along with extra content from every previous guest on the podcast. You can hear it all for just £5. It's the very best way to support the podcast.

From MagicWeek Profile: Danny Buckler is one of Great Britain's fastest rising stars of comedy and magic, with a unique style that has already taken him around the world and resulted in his own comedy special for Channel Four: Danny Does Tricks.Danny fell in love with performing almost as soon as he could walk but it was while at college, when called upon to perform a self devised piece as part of a drama course, that Danny realised this was something he could do with his life. Danny has worked his way up through London's tough comedy circuit to become one of its most popular performers - regularly playing at all the top venues including Jongleurs and The Comedy Store. Danny also works as a TV warm-up artist, on shows as diverse as the hard hitting Channel Four show Is This Your Life? (Open Media) and the award winning sitcom Dinner Ladies (Positive Productions). Last year Danny was called upon to do a 'Bob Hope' and entertain troops overseas in Bosnia and Northern Ireland. He was also a part of the weekly 'cultural event' that was 'Having Words With The Barefoot Doctor' in which the Doc would let Danny perform magic or just let out whatever was on his mind!
Danny was the opening act for Victoria Wood on her recent sell-out tour and was chuffed to bits to be asked to perform alongside Victoria and Imelda Staughnton as part of the recent show Victoria Wood and Friends at the Adelphie Theatre, in London's West End. This year Danny is teaming up with the amazing Mandy Muden to bring their first show, Two Funny Magicians, to the Edinburgh Festival.
Joshua Jay (born October 30, 1981) is a magician, author, and lecturer. He has performed in over 100 countries, and he was awarded the top prize at the World Magic Seminar in 1998. He fooled Penn and Teller on their hit show, Fool Us, and he holds a Guinness World Record for card tricks. Jay has done magic on numerous television shows, most recently Good Morning America and The Today Show. Most recently, in January 2018, Joshua was recognized by the Society of American Magicians with their highest proclamation, for his contribution to the art of magic. Joshua attended Ohio State University and currently resides in New York City.
Joshua has designed illusions for stage and screen, including a recent collaboration with HBO for Game of Thrones. Joshua consulted with the United States Postal Service on the design of their postage stamp series, Magic.
On January 30, 2016, at the Columbus Magi-Fest, Joshua set the Guinness World Record for Most Selected Cards Found from a Shuffled Deck in One Minute. He found 21 cards, a record that still stands.
Joshua has done innovative research into what he has classified as "Tragic Magic," tricks that have proved fatal to magicians, assistants, and even spectators. Joshua has delivered keynote addresses on the history of magic at museums across the country, and written an academic article on the subject for Gibiciere.
Joshua appeared at the 2008 Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama, and has also delivered private performances for former President Clinton.
In 2008, Joshua and best-friend Andi Gladwin founded Vanishing Inc. Magic, a retail magic outlet that manufactures and distributes props to magicians. Vanishing Inc. is currently one of the largest magic shops in the world, with warehouse and shipping operations in the US and Europe.I sat down for a GREAT chat with Josh. I hope you enjoy it.

I love the concept of this podcast. There are so many interview podcasts out there just getting into biographical detail. For performers, magicians or any other Showman, can gain deep insights from the thoughtful questions from the excellent host. It’s also a great line up of guests.
Great host, Great show
I listen to a ton of entertainment podcasts and there is nothing like this out there! Mark is not only a brilliant performer in his own right but knows everything there is to know about the history of performing magic and the origin of different effects. His ability to draw the best out of his guests and weave a thread of history threw the conversation is wonderful. You leave knowing more about the guests, the history of the effects they perform and it reminds you why you fell in love with this bizarre art in the first place.
Mark is a classy Man
Mark James is a brilliant performer and has a lot to say on the subject. A great listen!
