4.9 Cognitive Clarification Part 2 (Refreshed File)

*Refreshed file submitted as original one had overlapping audio at one point, but it may take a few hours before the new file appears on your app. If you hear a problem about 10-11 minutes into the episode, delete the episode, refresh feed, and download newer file.

Today we'll examine how Marsha Brantley dealt with cognitive inconsistencies when she wrote in her blog, as well as how she wrote about Donnie and her marriage. The words chosen by someone can reveal much about the mental state. Sometimes it is looking at their specifically chosen words, sometimes it is looking at the themes revealed in their words, and sometimes it is looking at word choices they probably wouldn’t have consciously chosen, but show subconscious thoughts.

Pouring through the blog, there is a lot of evidence of Marsha engaging in lowering her cognitive dissonance.

    4.8 Cognitive Dissonance Part 1

    4.8 Cognitive Dissonance Part 1

We know that Marsha was a smart, tenacious, loyal woman who’d learned early in life to have faith that God would meet her needs and she could work through problems herself.

It is her faith in particular that leads me to follow a new line of academic research today, Cognitive Dissonance, and discuss how it can impact someone in a domestic violence situation.
There's a much larger body of research about Cognitive Dissonance, so I expanded the episode to outline the theory and explain how it intersects with family violence. Next week, we'll dig into Marsha's blogs and take a look at how she dealt with the cognitive dissonance that she was facing in her life, as well as what we've learned about her from friends and family.

If you don't want to hear about the theory and early research studies, you may forward to 18:33 to when we discuss how it intersects with domestic violence.

    4.7 Status and Emotional Abuse

The research indicates that Marsha was actually at a higher risk for life-threatening violence, even though on the surface she didn’t seem to be. Find out why in today's episode.

    Peace, My Friends

    Peace, My Friends

My dear friends, I am writing and recording this brief episode after the distressing events on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in which a group of people – rioters – mobbed the capital of the United States and attempted to stop the Constitutional duties of our legislatures. I haven't been able to focus on much else this week, so there will not be an episode today.

    4.6 Victim Profile Part 2

    4.6 Victim Profile Part 2

Marsha Rader Brantley had personality traits that seem contradictory. Some describe her as fun, while others describe her as private and aloof. As we develop the victim profile, let’s dig into her personality as well as the situations that shaped her in her adult life.

We finish the victim profile today and will be prepared to discuss domestic violence next week.

Thank you to Andie Elizabeth for reading Marsha's Blog. Andie was a Vocal Performance and Communication Advertising major from the college where Marsha Brantley once worked. I think Marsha would have approved. Check out her vocal work on her website https://andieelizabeth.com

Very important topic

I appreciate the creator’s podcast and all the important information it gives. Thank you for keeping it up even if new episodes are not being made. I love podcasts that are both informative and entertaining. The topic of domestic violence affects many and is good to try to understand and learn. I have lived it myself so I find it intriguing and hope to help others in the future.

The evidence and research aspect

As a sentencing specialist, I really appreciate the way you base your podcast on current research it helps in my work crafting appropriate sentencing recommendation for domestic violence perpetrators. Of special note this is the first podcast I’ve ever listened to or subscribed to. Thank you so much for your work. Please keep going👍

Lots of problems which is a shame…

… Because the content is SO important. Not a candidate for winding down at the end of the day. Immediately you’re hit with a loud, hyped-up commercial. Just like TV. It’s sad, so sad. AND the ads are just PLOPPED into the narrative mid-sentence, terrible production quality. The other bothersome thing about the host is long personal descriptions of concepts. Example, the 4-minute mark of episode 1.5… where she describes the concept of research using her glasses. Really?! We aren’t all 12-year olds. This is personal hot air — not reporting. I agree with Misukicoolness, these stories feel like they are being construed into fairy tales vs. the serious crimes that they are. I think the host is missing a level of understanding that may be brought on by a “happy childhood”. It feels like she is disconnected from the reality of abuse. I know this is only my speculation. But I call this “reckless optimism”.
