    Feedback

    FROM MARK

    Hey Nate and Ian,

Just catching up on TM240 and listening to you discuss live-streamed theatre and I thought you might be interested to know that at least the Globe Theatre (the one on the southbank) kinds of did this for part of their children’s programme. My kids, 6 and 9 attended a version of Romeo and Juliet back in Feb on Zoom where about 50 families called in for each live show. It was a format that was half acting and half storytelling so only had 1-2 actors but was very well done and is similar to a format of live shows they did for kids before the pandemic. It was great live and we had organised to watch it with a couple of other families each in our own homes which worked surprisingly well. It looks like they may still be doing it if you wanted to read a bit more about it https://www.shakespearesglobe.com/seasons/telling-tales-2021/

All About Tech’s Message On Apple Podcasts

All About Tech’s Message On Apple Podcasts

Welcome, Apple Podcast user! Nate Lanxon here. I’m excited to be able to bring the extended version of Tech’s Message to Apple Podcasts, which for years has only been available via our Patreon membership.

This is the version of the show Ian and I refer to as the main one. In a sense, it’s less that this one’s extended but rather that the free ad-supported one is shortened, since we script each week for what becomes the extended version and remove about a third of it for the edition that goes out for free. But to almost all listeners, it’s extended compared to what they’re used to, usually by about 15 minutes a week.

There are no ads in the versions you pay for, and the archive of all shows right back to around episode 100, when we started making longer versions, are available to subscribers on Apple Podcasts or Patreon.

One thing I’ve had to pay a great deal of attention to when deciding to offer a subscription on Apple Podcasts is of course cost, but also what to offer. Here’s what things looked like up to now:

We had the basic free, ad-supported version that goes out on the RSS and in the main Apple catalogue. That’s what the majority of people get.

Then over on Patreon, we offer the extended version for $2 a show, and for $1 more supporters get Extra Message, which is our weekly unscripted sister show that’s often me talking for 10 minutes in a forest about something behind the scenes that’s on my mind.

At both of these levels, Patrons get to listen to us record the show live too and chat to us during that recording in our Discord server — which if you’re unfamiliar is a bit like Slack or Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp or Telegram or IRC, but exclusively for supporters. We also talk through the week in the server and host livestream chat-a-longs when big tech companies host their keynotes.

And finally, for $1 more the higher-level Patrons also get access to on-demand versions of our live recordings, as well as the back catalogue of all unedited and uncensored live recordings. These always contain a lot of pre- and post-show chat, unprompted rants and expletives from Ian, and contain our bloopers and a lot more that we know the biggest fans love.

So, with this all in mind, what do I bring to Apple Podcasts?

I settled on the extended ad-free version only, and leaving all the other stuff — Extra Message, listening live, downloading live recordings, Discord membership etc — to Patreon.

I wanted to create a simple user journey, which always starts with the basic free version of the show. I want everyone to start there and get to know the podcast. Then if they like it and want to support us and get the full version, become a subscriber. But if you want an even richer experience, or don’t use Apple Podcasts, become a Patron and unlock the entire catalogue and community of Tech’s Message on any platform.

This is why the prices are set the way they are. We usually do four main episodes a month, and on Patreon it’s billed per week — so if we don’t do a show, Patrons don’t pay. Apple Podcasts are monthly subscriptions, so we priced a little lower to accommodate the occasional month where we do 3 episodes rather than 4; and also to account for the fact that Apple Podcasts don’t support listening live or joining our Discord server. For a variety of reasons, logistical mostly, this still requires a Patreon membership.

Hopefully this all makes sense and explains the choices I’ve made and why things are priced the way they are. As always, I’m an open book when it comes to this stuff and always happy to take feedback. Maybe there’s appetite for Extra Message on Apple Podcasts? If so, tell me, and we can make it happen in future. The same goes for the live recordings. At the end of the day I just want to give people the simplest access to whatever form of the show they enjoy mo

Well done tech news review. Great!

I really enjoy this podcast. Tech stories that you don't always hear the US, and they also have a UK perspective I find very interesting.

Great Show

Really enjoying catching up on this show! I’ve only recently discovered it, so I’m about a year behind. The show is very accessible, relevant (even a year later) and entertaining. Thanks to Nate and Ian for a great show!
