    2023 Impact of IBD in Canada Report

    Dr. Eric Benchimol, Professor of Pediatrics and Northbridge Chair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at The Hospital for Sick Children and University of Toronto, and Kate Lee, Vice President of Research and Patient Programs at Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, discuss some of the key findings outlined in the 2023 Impact of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Canada Report. We take a look at what the report has to say about topics such as pediatrics, mental health, direct & indirect costs, and precision medicine, all within IBD in Canada.     Peter Dobranowski – Dedicating Your Life to IBD

    Not only is Peter Dobranowski an IBD Warrior but he has literally dedicated his life to IBD…by choice. Why? Well, he says, “someone’s gotta do it”. In this episode, Peter shares his story about his diagnosis and his journey with IBD. But Peter’s journey doesn’t end there because his life really does involve everything IBD. He is currently a second year PhD student in the Microbiology and Immunology program at the University of Ottawa where he is studying how the microbiome responds to a special type of fibre in kids with Crohn’s and Colitis. He is also a Crohn’s & Colitis Canada volunteer, received the BC Unsung Hero Award (2019), was the recipient of the AbbVie IBD scholarship (2019), completed a patient-led qualitative research project through the University of Calgary (PaCER), and is also piloting a program to expand the availability and accessibility of support to the Indo-Canadian community with IBD.     Noah Weber is a pretty incredible teen and IBD Warrior who co-founded the organization ‘Athlete vs. Crohn’s & Colitis’ with Larry Nance Jr., NBA Basketball Player for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Noah shares his journey with Crohn’s Disease from diagnosis, surgery, and various medications.     Relationships with Nutrition & Diet when living with IBD

    This episode features two Registered Dietitians working in Toronto. Inez Martincevic, a Clinical Dietitian practicing within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at The Hospital for Sick Children and Julie Cepo who is an Inpatient Clinical Dietitian with the GI Medicine & Surgery Program at Mount Sinai Hospital. We discuss how a Registered Dietitian can help IBD’ers navigate the very complicated space of nutrition & diet while living with such a complex disease. Regardless of diagnosis, diet is pertinent to our health. Why is it important to know where your disease is specifically located? How does disease location impact your diet journey? What should you expect from a RD should you visit one? We chat about hot topics like hydration and IBD, eating small meals, food journals, etc. We discuss our relationships with food, why these relationships change, and why they should change.

    “Thoughts Are Not Facts” – The Mind & IBD with Sick Kids Psychologist, Dr. Ahola Kohut

    Dr. Ahola Kohut is a Clinical Health Psychologist at Sick Kids, who works specifically with children with IBD. She splits her time between research and clinical work. In this episode she shares valuable information regarding mental health and IBD. We discuss how our minds are wired to survive and socialize and this sometimes relates to negative feelings. Dr. Ahola Kohut offers advice and strategies for not only individuals with IBD but our caregivers as well. She shares her approaches of mindfulness and acceptance with the kids, teens, and families she works with and how these approaches can help individuals in their everyday life regardless of age or diagnosis. We discuss the stigmas associated with IBD and what could be some of the challenges, like the need to be “perfect”. We discuss the importance and need to adapt care and resources online to meet the social needs for youth experiencing IBD.
