    Conversations: Manzanar Fishing Club

    Conversations: Manzanar Fishing Club

Many of us understand the sense of freedom provided by fishing. But, many of us will never understand how powerful that sense of freedom was for some. Daniel talks to filmmaker Cory Shiozaki about the dark chapter of concentration camps in the US, which incarcerated over a hundred thousand American citizens. One such concentration camp was Manzanar, in the Eastern Sierra. At Manzanar, some internees risked their lives to sneak out and go fishing, possibly tenkara, in the Eastern Sierra to get some respite, and a sense of freedom and dignity not allowed to them otherwise. Fishing always brings with it a glimmer of hope. But, it can also provide a sense of freedom, and dignity, as the story behind the Manzanar Fishing Club shows us.

After their conversation, Daniel also speaks his mind about our support and solidarity for the Black Lives Matter movement. After all, our mission to improve our environment is only driven by the people who will enjoy it, and they must be alive and feel safe to enjoy the environment for which we work so hard for.

Nice to have you back... or it was

A few months ago I wrote a review simply titled “Nice to have you back” in response to Daniel’s return to the podcast. I now question that, based solely on the interview with the obviously racist Jason Klass.

Having never heard of this individual before I thought the conversation would be about a new prospective of Tenkara. Sure enough it was a lesson in how some people are so blind and backward-thinking, they fail to see the good in anything. Even something as pure and simple as Tenkara.

What gives Klass the right to question the role/prominence of elders? So you’ve fished for 10 years and hiked a bunch, big deal, get over yourself. Try exploring the true cultural heritage of something before you criticize it. Try actually immersing yourself in the other (or any other) culture before you criticize it. Try having at least having some consideration for others and their historical precedent/considerations before you critique it.

This interview ruined this podcast for me. Having this obvious ethnocentrist on the show was a deal-breaker.
