Episode 12. Tenor Talk with Nate Lepine

Doug Stone talks to jazz musicians about life, music, recent and upcoming performances, equipment and current events on this Tenor Talk Podcast recording. A different jazz musician is featured in each episode.  This episode features Nate Lepine and was recorded March 13, 2020.

Known to date primarily for his work as a go-to sideman, he has appeared on over three dozen recordings by a wide range of artists including indie mainstays Cursive and Iron and Wine, and alt rock outfit Poi Dog Pondering. While ably lending his instrumental voice to these and many other popular projects, Lepine, whose true calling is jazz, has spent years cultivating his own music, building a repertoire of original compositions and performing frequently on the circuit of Chicago jazz clubs as an improviser. In the fall of 2014, the time had come to document the culmination of those efforts, and Lepine assembled a first-rate quartet to record ten of his compositions at Strobe Studio in Chicago. The result of that two day session is his long awaited debut album as a bandleader, Vortices.

King of the Hill

What an awesome podcast from one of the best saxophonists I had a chance to play with. If those words in the title sound familiar, there from a (now old) standard called “New York, New York” which talks about making to the mountain peak. But really, where is that? If you look at it symbolically, it’s more about being the best that you can be, and Doug Stone lives with that in mind. The peak can be anywhere geographically speaking; for Doug - he reaches out from the city of Baton Rouge.

The early interviews with Brad Walker and Clarence Johnson are personal favorites - highly recommend! Looking forward to catching up on ALL of his podcasts!!
