S2 018: Malin Akerman — The Rock Goddess: Be Present and You Won't Miss A Beat (The Comeback, The Hearthbreak Kid, Couple's Retreat, 27 Dresses, Wanderlust, The Proposal, Watchmen...)

Today, I welcome Malin Akerman into the hot seat. Not only has this fearless beauty starred in countless blockbuster films like WATCHMEN, 27 DRESSES, and RAMPAGE, she also has explored- and conquered- the indie film world and is now producing her own content.
But how did this modern-day movie star really get her start? In this episode, we pull back the curtain on what it’s like to go from- within a year- being broke and sleeping on a futon while fronting a rock band, to booking a series regular role on HBO’s The Comeback. Find out how she handled being asked to improvise on the spot in a chemistry read with Ben Stiller (for the lead in the Farrelly Brother’s THE HEARTBREAK KID) and her fight to be considered for deeper, more nuanced roles like Annie, a woman with alopecia in HAPPY THANK YOU MORE PLEASE and Lara, a strong mother amidst the chaos in HBO’s BILLIONS.

S2 017: Brandon Kyle Goodman — 99% of the Work is Being a Better Human (Modern Love, Big Mouth, Feel The Beat, People Just Do Nothing Plus One, The Blackout...)

From bringing diverse, powerful characters to life on the screen, to writing scripts for one of the most successful television series on Netflix, Brandon Kyle Goodman has emerged in the entertainment industry as a powerful force with a voice to be reckoned with.
This summer, Goodman can be seen starring in Netflix’s upcoming feature film, “Feel the Beat,” opposite Sofia Carson. The drama follows an out-of-work actress, April (Carson), who returns to her small hometown after failing to find success on Broadway and is soon recruited to train a misfit group of young dancers for a big competition. Goodman shines as the outspokenly brave, queer Deco, April’s neighbor and support system while she adjusts returning to her country life. “Feel the Beat” is slated to premiere on Netflix on June 19, 2020.

S2 016: Rosalind Chao — The Consummate Actor (Mulan, The Joy Luck Club, The Laundromat, The National Theatre, This Is Us, Better Things, Code Black, The Catch, Black-ish, The OA, Sin City Saints, Shameless...)

S2 016: Rosalind Chao — The Consummate Actor (Mulan, The Joy Luck Club, The Laundromat, The National Theatre, This Is Us, Better Things, Code Black, The Catch, Black-ish, The OA, Sin City Saints, Shameless...)

She’s the actress who's been in just about everything. You know that actor whose face you know like the back of your hand and whose work never fails to leave you wondering just how do they do it. Well get ready to be let in on the light that is Rosalind Chao. Listening to this woman share about her journey her childlike play spirit shines through. It’s no wonder she was discovered as a small child running up and down the aisles of her parent’s restaurant. Rosalind has allowed herself to flow from theatre to TV to film and back again. She’s not shy about her struggles with self-doubt and fear but it is her work ethic that is unwavering.
Even more impressive than her five-decade long resume is her determination to keep her personal life the priority. This woman lives from trust and abundance. It’s no wonder she just keeps working. She is the consummate actor who most recently appeared in the new play The Great Wave at The National Theatre in London just before she began shooting Disney’s live action Mulan scheduled to open in theatres this July. Listen and soak up her sense of freedom with the work and healthy detachment to the business. A lesson we all can keep learning. I admire this woman deeply and am thrilled to share the wealth of her wide breadth of experience.

S2 015: Maximiliano Hernandez — The Foundation of a Working Actor & P.S. Thank You, Randi Hiller

S2 015: Maximiliano Hernandez — The Foundation of a Working Actor & P.S. Thank You, Randi Hiller

Today’s guest has put in his 10,000 hours and then some. As he says, he’s marked his spot.
We’re talking with Maximiliano Hernandez, who’s an actor, writer, producer, and teacher. Many of you will know him for his role as Agent Jasper Sitwell in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s appeared in Thor, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Endgame, as well as Marvel’s hit TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
His journey began in Brooklyn and continued to the stage in New York City before moving on to a prolific career in film and television. His credits range from TV dramas like FX’s The Americans, TNT’s The Last Ship, Amazon’s Hand of God, and Audience Network’s Mr. Mercedes. As well as critically acclaimed films like Sicario and Warrior.
He shares how being dyslexic is one of his superhero talents, how being a ‘nice guy’ can seal the deal, and how important it is to stay open, stay prepared, and to let go of how we think things should happen. That’s when the magic can happen.

BONUS: David Jolliffe, Sean Astin & Shaan Sharma — Get Out the No Campaign: A SAG-AFTRA Panel Discussion

BONUS: David Jolliffe, Sean Astin & Shaan Sharma — Get Out the No Campaign: A SAG-AFTRA Panel Discussion

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2020, SAG-AFTRA members will be voting either “Yes” or “No” on the proposed 2020 TV/Theatrical Contract. While the SAG-AFTRA National Board has been pushing for a “Yes” vote from members, today’s guests will discuss the ways in which they feel the union has failed to disclose the whole story and exactly what this contract will mean for performers in the entertainment industry moving forward.
In our current COVID-19 world, the need for performers has only increased as people turn to film and television for relief during an ongoing global health pandemic. Today, I sit down with actors and longtime SAG-AFTRA members, David Jolliffe, Sean Astin, and Shaan Sharma as they discuss the intricacies of the contract and how it lead to the development of the “Get Out the No” campaign in an effort to educate voters about the various ways in which the contract will affect performers in terms of income and residual payments, health and pension considerations, on set safety provisions and much more.
With so much still unknown as to when the film industry will reopen and resume work, today’s conversation is an important one. It brings into question how we as actors can continue to make a living as performers from the early stages of our careers, to well into our older years. Today’s guests are advocating for union members to be given what they deserve as valued members of the industry and ask us to consider the question, “At what point do you finally say no?”

Change your entire approach to acting

Nothing has given me more insight into the acting world than this podcast. I have a four year degree from a university and experience in shows and on set, but nothing has prepared me more or taught me more than this podcast. Alyshia is a wonderful interviewer, she asks incredible questions with integrity and an empathetic mind. Her guests are full of wisdom and lessons learned. This is a tough business, and we hear a lot of "no's" this podcast is refreshingly honest, but also incredibly postitive. Alyshia has inspired me and taught me how to keep pushing through, and better strategies on the business end of the audition room. Thank you Alyshia, for inspiring me to keep going. You are doing an incredible thing.

Your podcast is my saving grace!

Alyshia, I LOVE your show and have been subscribed and listening for years! I have heard amazing testimonies and experiences from actors I’ve admired, are friends with, have worked with or whose work I just love. I’ve been in the business for years and there are still SO MANY beautiful gems and nuggets I pick up on your show each week. You’re doing great work! You inform listeners/artists on the business, the CRAFT and life experiences all of which are so important. And man, your voice is so beautiful and relaxing. C’mon voice and diction! My favorite place to listen to you is in the car. It just relaxes me, all the while stimulating my brain and giving my spirit so much hope. It gets tough in this profession at times, but I always leave with so much hope and vigor after an episode of THAT ONE AUDITION. I know my breakthrough moment is right around the corner. And your show is apart of that saving grace and spiritual recharge. Thank you so much!
