Why I chose an alias for my last name

Why I chose an alias for my last name

Getting married at 40 posed many new challenges (and opportunities!): one of them being what to do with my new last name. I wanted to take the surname of my husband, but I also wanted to be mindful of my own brand that I've built over these first four decades of my life - as well as my entire professional career, nearly two decades at the time. If I had to legally change my name (again, my choice), as a marketer / brander, I wanted it to be to my advantage. Changing from Smith (my maiden name) to Johnson (my new legal surname), wasn't much of a difference, short of 3 extra letters and a move up in the alphabet. Johnson is just as common as Smith - so I got no change in uniqueness there from a business perspective. So I had the brilliant idea of adopting an alias my husband has on social media. This video is about the thought process surrounding that decision - including understanding whether or not that was legally possible to do and how to help people understand the difference between my new legal last name versus my public, business-oriented alias last name.

When you don't have enough money for a honeymoon: #minimoon

When you don't have enough money for a honeymoon: #minimoon

Do a minimoon! Rather than not doing any kind of getaway at all, many couples (about a third according to TheKnot.com – myself included) choose to delay a big honeymoon and do a minimoon instead. What is a minimoon? It’s the shorter, less expensive version of a honeymoon – typically something domestic or local that you can drive to. In fact, 88% of minimooners take a trip inside the country (according to TheKnot.com). Here's what a minimoon is and the rules to having a lovely one!

Planning a Wedding in Another City

Planning a Wedding in Another City

Did you know 1 in 4 weddings are considered a "destination wedding," with most occurring within the continental United States (source: XO Group, Travel Agent Central)? I'm not really calling what I did a destination wedding, since ours was just in another city - a SMALLER city than where we essentially live. We chose it for family reasons - largely so my 92-year old grandma could attend without having to spend the night somewhere (something she absolutely cannot do with her sundowners version of dementia). However, neither of us lived in that city, nor did any of our family members or friends (or planner!!). So I think I picked up a few tips you might wanna know. So if you're planning a wedding in a city where no one else lives, this video's for you. Also, be sure to grab my freebie Ultimate 40 Year Old Bride Guide - with all my best tips I wish I had my hands on when I was planning my wedding this year. Cheers and you're welcome!

MissADS08 ,

Excited about the conversation!

I started this podcast because I couldn't find anywhere really where people were having the conversations about getting engaged and married in their 40s. No one I could bounce ideas off of who was in the same boat as me and understood the unique situations, feelings and challenges facing a 40 year old bride. So I hope others join in on this conversation around dating, engagement, wedding planning and marriage. I think there's a lot of fun and meaningful potential here!
