    In this episode, I was fortunate to interview Brian Ferguson, the founder and CEO of Arena Labs, a company pioneering the field of high performance medicine, which brings the science of world-class performance, creative mastery, and elite teams into modern medicine. They take collective wisdom and power of people with deep experiences doing hard things under pressure, then focus that in the field of medicine! 
    Essentially, Arena labs focuses on the human element of being a front-line clinician by equipping them with the tools and technology to improve their performance, emotional intelligence, manage their sleep, stress, and health, and ultimately helping them improve patient safety and outcomes. 
    Brian spent a career in national security prior to founding Arena Labs.  His drive to take his knowledge and experience into the medical field came from his mom who was a nurse.  I personally spent 15 years working as an ER nurse prior to moving into the urgent care, so I know the effects of stress and the toll it takes on the body working in such a demanding area. In this episode, Brian discusses Arena labs, its goals, mission, resources, and how it can be integrated into individual lives of frontline workers or as a team. We discuss physical and emotional effects of stress and burnout. We discuss the impact on team members when leadership is not managing their stress, and much more!

My joints ached all over, and I had severe back pain that made it difficult to get through my clinical rotations! I had three spinal injections that were of little help! I was stressed out, sleep deprived, depressed, and my body was full of inflammation! Once I completed school, passed my boards, I realized I had to try to get my health back! I changed to a plant-based diet, starting walking, completed a 100-mile, 10- day challenge, started sleeping, changed my mindset, and through it all, I found my purpose (other than being a mom to four beautiful children)! Everything I was learning about health, wellness, mindset, & longevity, I wanted to share with everyone else, so I started The 5-Minute NP. I realized  small, incremental health changes were actually life changing!

    Jimmy Wightman, largely known on Instagram as, "That Meditation Guy," joined me on this episode to share more about his passion, transcendental meditation. The benefits of meditation are well researched and evidence has shown it can reduce stress, improve sleep, mental, and physical health, improve our relationships and sex life, and help us live longer.

    Jimmy suffered for years with insomnia robbing him of his joy and decreasing his quality of life. He had heard that mediation was a scientifically proven way to treat his insomnia problem, so tried to learn everything he could about it. He took courses on mindfulness, read books, and listened to guided meditation CDs, but he never found that deep inner place he had heard about, and his insomnia problem wasn't fixed. That is until he found a teacher from the ancient Vedic tradition, and after four days of solid meditation training, his sleep problems, and his life journey had been discovered. After years of training, he now teaches busy people the most powerful, transformative meditation technique there is for connecting to "deep inner silence and stillness." He shows you how to get into this state in just 20 minutes, and once you've mastered the skill, it is with you for life.
