Trove of insight for a newcomer to coding
Starting with the disclaimer that I’ve written a couple hundred lines of code in my life. I just turned 44 and spent most of my career in financial services. My first job in that industry was at an exchange. I was replaced (along with 100 or so others) by a rack server a couple months after I started. I became a broker just as online trading exploded and commissions collapsed. I started learning about crypto-currency 5 years ago (didn’t get rich, somehow). I can now see blockchain eating the rest of my industry and putting my out of a job again. I’m tired of being on the wrong side of the machine.
I’ve tried to self-learn coding, but a few days or hours into a tutorial and it feels like the first step on a walk to Saturn. I found the 6-figure Dev podcast by random search for a programming podcast, hoping there was something exactly like this. Actual pros having a conversation where I could get some real world context around the programming industry. I’ve listened to 15 episodes and will listen to all of them. I now have a great reading list and a bunch of online resources, and I know where to start to get to where I want to go. Each episode has filled in more of the big picture that I need to grok to commit the time at the screen. I know it’s a lot, but now it feels more like walking to Peru. I can do that. Thank you guys for taking the time, it’s my most valuable resource so far in bridging the gap and I really enjoy the conversations immensely. I hope to be a guest in 3-4 years.
