The Ale Evangelist Show The Ale Evangelist Show is a podcast designed to help get out the good news of fine craft beers, enjoying them, where to find them, and what they are. We aim on this show to have a broad mix of information on what makes good beer good, as well as a smattering of interviews from brewers, establishment owners, and moguls in the beer scene around the Central Valley of California. About Your Hosts, the Ale Evangelists: Scotsman, Chris Dow I’ve been interested in beer since somewhat before I SHOULD have been interested in beer. One night, I was attending a party, and a friend and I went to pick out beer. I suggested the names of some well-known mass-produced beers of the time, and was summarily sworn at in the middle of the store. Surprised at his vehemence, I asked and was informed that “GOOD” beer was worth buying, while the other stuff was swill. Sensing a challenge in this, I made it my business to, when it was legal for me to do so, learn all I could about beer, brewing, and the enjoyment of these activities. I am by no means THE expert on the subject, of course. Plenty of talented brewers and imbibers know far more than I, but it is my passion for this fine beverage which drives me to talk about it so often. As I often say, beer is not the most important thing in the world to me, but it’s definitely up there. My nickname comes from my ancestry as well as another of my passions, Scotland. You can take a Scot out of Scotland, but you can never take Scotland out of the Scot, and I am proof of that. Drew, Andrew Edwards Andrew’s history with fermented beverages begins, like many, with a quest to enjoy life. If wine gladdens the heart of man, as the Good Book says, then beer and spirits should not be ignored, either, thought Drew! Drew was drawn to spirits early on with an emphasis on mixology. A skilled mixer, Andrew introduced many of his friends to the wonders of well-made cocktails. As Drew began tasting various beers far and wide, he began gravitating more and more toward the fine craft beers becoming ubiquitous in the area. Soon, he was collecting an enviable cellar stable of fine ales. A traveler for his work, Drew collects fine beers from his travels and always brings some amazing stuff to the table.
The Triumphant Return
In this long-awaited episode of the Ale Evangelist show, Rodbo, Ale Evangelist Dan, and the Scotsman drink the Lagunitas Super Cluster, as well as Horsefly Brewing Company’s Coconut porter. They talk of life, work, Dan’s roving's, as well as they discuss the present and future state of the Ale Evangelist Show.
It’s a smattering of beer-related topics as well as some discussion of Modesto’s newest brewery, Persuasion Brewing Company! (You know it better as The Market at La Comisaria!) Don’t miss this episode of the Ale Evangelist Show!
Beer Potporri & Heady Topper
In this EXTREMELY BELATED episode of the Ale Evangelist Show, Whitey and the Scotsman shoot the breeze about Alaskan beer, Central Coast Beers, the mudslide several months ago, how the Scotsman is building his own arcade joystick, video game arcades, Cobra Kai, and whatever was happening last summer when they recorded this. Scotsman geeks out a bit on the New England Style IPA, talking about why they’re hazy.
They drink the Rogue Coffee Blonde Ale, donated by Patrick Krebbs, and the Alchemist’s Heady Topper(!!!) donated by Mrs. The Scotsman’s Cousin!
The Vicious Vinyl Homebrewer
On this episode of the Ale the Scotsman, Rodbo , and Drew are joined by a very special guest. Homebrewer Scott from the Ripon Brewins joins us to pour 4 of his homebrews for the show. He poured an American Amber, a Chocolate Brownie Stout, a Pumpkin Pie Ale, and a Pale Ale.
The guys discuss the intentions and inspiration of the brewer, the differences in various styles, and provide very few pointers on how the beers can be improved. It was a lot of fun, and this episode is not without the rabbit trails they have become known for.
The State of Jefferson makes a reappearance, and the Vicious Vinyl Homebrewer explains how he got his Instagram name.
Don’t miss this episode of the Ale Evangelist Show!
Knee Deep... In Beer
On this episode of the Ale Evangelist Show, Whitey, Rodbo, and the Scotsman sip some listener-provided IPA. The show beer this week is brought to you by Patrick Krebbs, who supplied a carmel-malt-forward IPA from Dragonmead Brewing out in Michigan (a Midwest brewery, I’ll have you know!).
Next, the guys talk about the lawsuit against Knee Deep Brewing out of Auburn by Sony Pictures. Were people really confusing Breaking Bud with the hit show Breaking Bad? Did folks really assume that the highly successful Breaking Bud beer was affiliated with Sony? A judge is going to have to decide, as Sony is actually asking for DAMAGES on this case.
A second show beer, brought by Whitey is a Washington stout that the guys drink in honor of Dave Bowman of Plausibly Live!
Finally, the guys can’t stay away from the State of Jefferson brewfest, and the Scotsman goes a little further in his characterization of those who are pro-State-of-Jefferson…please, send us angry voicemails!
Hilarity ensures on this episode of the Ale Evangelist Show.
Green Flash in a Pan
On this episode, Whitey and the Scotsman get to drink Contains No Juice by the most excellent Alvarado Street Brewing Company. It really deserves its name and is really a great beer.
With that out of the way, the guys begin to talk about the current goings-on with Green Flash Brewing Company. How has such a stalwart beer in the California Beer scene had such a precipitous decline? Well, the Scotsman put some legwork in and took a look at many of the press releases going back to 2013 with regards to Green Flash’s acquisitions, expansions, and even some departures. Does it tell a picture of someone who grew too much, too quickly, or was this simply a case where the market turned against them? Well, you be the judge, but we think you’ll find the history tells the tale.
Somehow they end up talking about the State of Jefferson, serial killers, and the criminal justice system (?). All in a day’s work on this episode of the Ale Evangelist Show!
Never Fear…Glitter Beer!
On this wandering, wide-ranging episode of the Ale Evangelist Show, Whitey and the Scotsman talk about everything from Koolickles (which they actually TASTE on the show) to glitter beer, to retro video games, to spiders, to unique beer dispensing methods, to entering the beer fest season. They go all OVER the place.
Show beers for this random show are the Cleophus Quealy Oatmeal Stout, and the Morgan Territory Hoptomic Double IPA, both dispensed by The Sub, which they also talk about.
Finally, listener Johnny K submits a question/challenge to the Ale Evangelists, which they answer and discuss on the show. Don’t miss this episode of the Ale Evangelist Show!

Learning a ton bout beer!
I wish I knew a 10th as much about beer as these brothers do, loving it and learning a ton… Wish we had this kind of beer selection around Memphis, Tennessee!
As you may know already, I am not a "beer guy" by tradition. But I do enjoy hearing these guys talk about how much they like beer and how the consumption of it will lead them into discussions about things that are very funny.
Sit back with some food and adult beverages of your choice and enjou the trip...
