Welcome to the Art of Living Big podcast. My name is Betsy Peik. I’m an author, a speaker, and a trainer of NLP and hypnotherapy. And I’m focused on helping you understand and design your life with the power of the subconscious. This podcast is designed to help you think differently about what could be possible for your life. Now, let’s go live big.
Betsy:
Hello, fellow adventurers. It feels so funny to be back. It feels like. How does it feel? It feels sort of like when you haven’t seen a friend in a long time and you pull into the coffee shop and you’re like, oh, my gosh, that’s what it feels like. And also a little nervous. I’m a little nervous. Hi. Hi.
Betsy:
Welcome. Hi, everybody. Any new folks that are listening? Hello and welcome. I have been doing this show for seven years and I took a short hiatus. I don’t know, maybe like seven weeks or so. If it was seven weeks, that would be kind of cool because I’ve been doing this for seven years, but I’m so excited to be back and I’m so grateful for the time. I have to tell you, the first couple of weeks, I was like, this feels like such a release, like such a relief to not have to be thinking and coming up with stuff and really fitting the recording into my schedule because it had gotten really busy and so just having that space. But then the longer time went on, the more I was like, oh, I really want to come back.
Betsy:
I really want to connect with everybody and share some thoughts and things that are going on. So I have so many things to tell you and some magical, wild things to tell you, too. So if you’ve never been here before on the show or you’ve just listened to a few episodes, we’re a little sciency and a little believe in the magic of the spirit. So a little touch of both to kind of bring some balance into this experience. So, as I always say, take what works for you, discard the rest. I am on the journey with you and I am learning along the way. And so, so many of the stories and things that I bring to the show are really things that I have been learning, things that I’Ve been experiencing. All right, so let’s kind of dive in here.
Betsy:
I’m getting settled in my new house, so if you’ve been here for a little bit, you know, I bought a new old house, like almost a hundred year old house back in May. I moved in in June, and there was a million things to fix and do and I feel like I’m finally getting a little settled. Do you guys know who she did? I should look. Let me look. Hang on. Okay, so she’s a film producer, and she has made a lot of movies that you’ve loved, like the holiday father of the Bride. Okay, so when you think about that, you probably have the father of the bride like house in your mind, right? Or if you watched the holiday, did you guys ever watch that? It’s like one of my favorite Christmas movies, the Holiday. You remember the interiors of the houses.
Betsy:
So the holiday, they switch houses, right? It’s Cameron Diaz and whatever her name is. Sorry, but the point is the interiors. So as I have been putting my house together and I’m nowhere close, but I’m keeping Nancy Meyer’s aesthetic in. It’s actually. I kind of feel like maybe it’s starting to work. I’m typically not a super great decorator, but I do my best. So Google Nancy Meyer’s aesthetic and you’ll see what I mean. -

Hello fellow adventurers. Hi, everyone. I have I have been thinking, I’ve been struggling like, what should I talk about this week? What’s the show gonna be about like every day, as they get closer to when I would be recording? I’m like, Why should I talk about? You know, I have had, I’ve had this podcast for seven years. I talked about this last year, we just finished our seventh year. And I’ve shared a lot of stuff. And I’m like, I feel like I’m starting to say the same things again, which I think one does, if you’re talking every week, for seven years. So I’ve been struggling with what am I going to talk about. And then last night, in the middle of the night, I woke up, you know how you wake up sometimes in your thinking some random thing. And I was thinking
when I was in Iceland,
when I went to Iceland,
the one thing that made that experience really easy. This is a weird thing. But again, remember, I just woke up in the middle of the night and thought this, the thing that made it really easy was that the bed was so comfortable. Like every place we went, beds are like a big Nordic thing. They have these like thick pads on all beds, every Airbnb, I went to every hotel, and then they have tons of down pillows and comforters. I mean, every bed was like insanely comfortable. And I remember, at the time thinking like, This is so great, because every bed is so comfortable. I woke up thinking that was so great. Every bed was so comfortable.
And then as I laid there, I thought when I went to get my Master Practitioner certification for NLP years ago, I went to Philadelphia, and I stayed in an Airbnb with a few other girls. And the bed that I had was so terrible. And I’m not even like it’s not like it’s kind of uncomfortable, like it was almost an livable, they had like this super thin comforter, and I ended up sleeping on top of the comforter just to have padding. And it was it was so much better. Okay, so that’s how bad it was. So in the middle of the night, I wake up and I’m thinking, you know, Iceland, I appreciated that so much. Those were the most comfortable beds. And then I thought, remember those terrible beds in Philadelphia.
Those were awful. And it occurred to me, even though we hear this all the time, and we say this all the time. But it occurred to me that I appreciated the beds in Iceland so much more. Because I had such a terrible experience with the Airbnb beds when I was in Philadelphia. Now,
those were years apart. They weren’t close together. But because I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it, which is when our unconscious mind is doing its sifting and sorting and weeding out and showing us things and making things obvious to us. You know, you’ve probably heard me talk before, about to about before you go to bed, writing a problem on a pad of paper, -

Hello fellow adventurers. Hi, everybody.
Welcome, welcome. Welcome. So a few days ago, I was looking something up in my, in my journal. So I’ve talked about how I use an app for my journaling app that I’ve used for years and years and years. It’s called day one. And the cool thing is, is that it shows you like on this day, 10 years ago, on this day, two years ago, whatever it shows you all of that, and I was looking and I was like, Oh my gosh, it’s been seven years since we started the podcast. I, every year I forget. And then it’s like October, and I’m like, oh my god, I missed September. But it has been seven years since we’ve been here together. And so I wanted to take at least a second just to celebrate, that is the most consistent thing I’ve ever done in my life.
Oh my gosh, it’s lasted longer than lots of things. And so um, you know, I wrote a post on my Facebook and in an Instagram and I had posted the four covers that we’ve had over the years. And it’s funny, because
you know, this has been such a journey for me of sharing. And I know a lot of you have been here, like the whole time. And those covers when I look at them. I’m like, Oh, I remember what was going on, you know, it’s sort of like, when a season felt complete, then a new me was emerging and a new cover needed to emerge to so I started out with this picture of me kind of looking off to the side. And I think it’s so interesting, because at that time, I really wanted to start the podcast, and how I started it was interviewing people. So not coming straight on, coming from the side, right where I would interview people like the first 50 episodes, were strictly interviews, and I still interview people from time to time, but not in that way. And so like almost a full year. And I was thinking about it. And I was like it’s really
sometimes we have this idea of what we want to do. And the LEAP feels really big. But there can be a step in between. And I think that that doing those interviews was that step for me. And then I moved into just about every episode where I was talking or sharing or teaching something. And then there’s a next cover, which is like a black and white cover where you only see half my face. And that is the time where my daughter started getting sick. Like as I was looking at it, I was like, that’s such an interesting cover, I took that photo of myself. And again, like, I can’t, you can’t see all of me because there’s this thing that I can’t really tell you about. And you know, as we navigated that and over the years, then there’s this next cover, right, so there was a cover in between that’s not in the post that I did. But there’s this cover that’s like me sitting I think in the middle of the road.
Just Zen and I think that that’s where I was chaos can be happening around me. It may look like there is disruption, but all is well. And then there’s a cover where I am holding a cup of coffee, just like it’s a cream background, -

Now, let’s go live big. Hi, everyone. Welcome fellow adventurers. Hi, I hope you’re having a good week. I missed last week, I wanted to do today’s episode and tell you about a little experiment that I’m doing. And it kind of feeds into last week. I sometimes I start these episodes, and I’m like, this isn’t going to be very long. And watch this be like a 45 minute one, but I don’t think this one’s going to be very long. So if you’ve been here for a little while, you have heard the episode with my daughter that I think now was recorded, you know, maybe two years ago. And we talked about some of her mental health issues that she shared. And she wanted to come on the show. If you listen to that episode, you’ll hear I was hesitant to have her on. But she is an adult and she wanted to talk about it. And I think it’s really great to destigmatize mental health, right, and mental health issues. So this week has been really hard. This has been really, really hard. And I decided that I was going to be as how do i i want to say joyful. And I know that sounds like a really strange word to use. But one of the things that I learned when I got COVID, back in July, and I don’t know if you remember me saying like, I felt so good when I came out of it. Like, I felt better than I’d felt in years. In years. Years and years and years, I felt this surge of energy. And I felt this, like incredible sense of enjoyment and happiness around the work that I do. And I’ve started showing up differently on social media in places where I would create content, like I just felt so good. And I realized in that that a component of me not feeling good. Why I had such contrast was because I have been pushing a lot. And you know, I talk about being in the moment and being in now and flowing through things. And I feel like I do a really good job with that. I also feel like I have a list of things that I’m trying to accomplish. And I approach that list of things, very corporate tea, right, like there is a list and there is a date that that has to be done. And come hell or high water, that thing has to be accomplished and checked off the list. And, you know, I think it has led me to realize that sometimes I was doing things that didn’t totally feel aligned or didn’t feel good while I was doing them. But in the end, I was happy to have done them. Like I was happy to have crossed the task off the list. But when I’m laying there during COVID, and I’m so sick, I can’t do anything. And I’m thinking about my list. And I’m thinking I don’t have to do it. And it was this recognition or this moment of like, I have been thinking I have to do that in order to get the outcome. But when I look back, most of the things where I really was pushing and not enjoying but like pushing to finish or to meet the deadline self imposed deadline, those things didn’t turn out the way I had anticipated. They didn’t really turn out that good. In fact many of them I just like abandon was like oh, -

Hello fellow adventurers. Hi, everyone. Welcome to the show today. So I’m sitting here having my coffee. It has been cool in Atlanta, like the last couple of days in the morning when I’ve gotten up. And I’ve sat on the porch, and it’s been actually cool. Today, I sat out there and I was like, Oh, my God, it feels cold, which I have to tell you, I am so excited for fall, like I’m so excited to not be melting, I just feel like the summer has been so bad. So I’m sitting here. And if you’ve been here for a little while, you know that a couple months ago, I moved into a house that’s like 100 years old, in Atlanta, in Atlanta. So I’m in my office, and I’m like, it’s cooler outside than it is inside, I’m gonna open the window. And some of the windows open, and some of them don’t, because the windows are original. And I don’t know if you guys have ever lived in, in an old house. But when I was growing up, the house that I lived in, was built around the same time as this house. And when I was growing up that house, the windows were very hard to get up and down. And they were on a pulley system.
So I went to open the window this morning and one of them wouldn’t open and the other one opened right up. But I could hear it was a pulley system. And I could hear the weights inside the wall clinging together. I don’t know, it was actually kind of wonderful. And I knew that the windows were old before when I bought the house, but some of them are new, and some of them are old. But I was like this, it feels so magical. The little clanging I don’t know, it just brought me joy, as I was getting ready to record. Alright, so I want to share with you a little something that
has been a shift for me. And I’m hoping that maybe it could be a shift for you too.
Now,
if you have been here for a little while, you’ve heard me mention it. Years ago, I used to own a CrossFit gym, right, and I was really in shape. And that was a big part of my life. And then as things changed in my life, and I could tell you a lot of reasons. I gained weight, and I’m in my 50s. And I lost some weight last year and have kept it off. But there’s more to go. And more importantly,
I don’t want to suffer to lose it. So I keep like asking myself like Are you ready? Are you ready to lose it but I don’t want to I don’t want to do what I think I’m using air quotes I would need to do in order to get rid of it. I’m just like focused on other things, and I want to be happy. And we just moved to this area and we’re going to new restaurants and trying new things. And I don’t want to be worried. I don’t want to be thinking about it. I don’t want to have that be like the biggest thing in my life. Like I I just want to live my life and be joyful. And if that means that I’m a size eight instead of a size four, then I don’t know. I just feel like that’s fine.
And there is still that part of me that’s like what I feel better. Sometimes I see pictures, -
