Very Funny But Very Narrow

The hosts are very funny and the podcast is really fun but they only seem to be interested in films from the 1990s and after. I assume because those are the ones they grew up with. They've done two Racheal Leigh Cook movies but never one with Katerine Hepburn. They've done four Tim Burton movies but never one by Hitchcock. Female film makers are also as unrepresented in the podcast as they are in film itself. No films by Sarah Polley or Jane Campion or Lynne Ramsey or Kasi Lemmons or Mira Nair. The podcast is also kind of relentlessly low-brow. The only foreign film they've done is Amelie which is probably the only one everyone has seen. They have a Patreon which is great where the vibe is more relaxed and is every bit as funny but they essentially do the same thing---90s films and later. Another semi-problem is that the funniest episodes are about the worst movies. I think they might have enjoyed talking about The Rock more than any other movie they've done. It's a shame because when things get more nuanced and complicated they can be very thoughtful but also seem to lose their sense of humor. So the most interesting films can make for less entertaining episodes. Overall a hit and definitely worth adding to the podcast queue. Though I wish they'd expand their interests more and really explore the depiction of women throughout film history and in different cultures through foreign films rather than comparing 90s Jumanji to current Jumanji or doing so many late 90s/early 2000 films that they start to notice subtle trends while never discussing the femme fatale in classic noir films or second wave feminism in the 1970s cinema. And a podcast like this should take more time to explore female directors. How great would an Elaine May movie be or Catherine Breillat. Very glad I found it though. You'll have a good time.
