Conversations from the Beer Tent.

We've all had 'em. After a long competition weekend, we meet with other members of our pipe band, or pipers and drummers from the bands that we beat and that beat us. We raise a pint to the victors, we solemnly toast the losers. We discuss the judges, their decisions, rotten and otherwise... We talk about our favorite Grade 1 bands, the Worlds... Then we talk about other stuff, things that have nothing to do with bagpipes, drums, Scotland, cabers, or haggis.

But this beer tent is for us, the great unwashed masses of bagpipers, snare drummers, tenor drummers, and the occasional bass drummer. This beer tent is for the Grade 5, Grade 4 players. We are not the experts, we are the fans. We do it because we love it, we watch it because we are fans. We do it again and again, even after the games leave us tired, broke, and occasionally hungover.

So come on into the Beer Tent, sit down, have a pint, have a listen.

New Guy in the band

I recently became involved in playing in a grade 4 pipe band in Southern California. I've been around pipe bands and all the festivals (at least local ) for about fifteen years as both of my sons are pipers. I always had this sort of secret desire to play in the band, but with a very minimal music background from my high school days, I didn't really think it would ever happen. Knowing that I don't have the dexterity or patience required to play the pipes, I used to joke with my son that I could play that big old bass drum. It wasn't really a joke, I really wanted to do it, but was afraid of making any commitment. Besides, the band already had a bass drummer. At the beginning of the 2013 season the band no longer had a bass drummer, and all eyes were on me to put my money were my mouth was. After much prodding from my wife I went to my first practice and quickly became hooked. With all that being said, I'll try to get to the point of the review.
I quickly realized that I new very little about the competition world of pipe bands. When my son suggested I listen to the Beer Tent podcast I downloaded the app.but never really found much time to listen to a full episode . Then I began listening while walking my dog. I have learned so much about the different aspects of competing, from the difficulty and expense of traveling,to the problems of just trying to maintain players and keep a band together. My dog has become quite a fan too. When
I turn on the podcast, she knows she's going for a walk. I have also enjoyed the beer revues. Now I know where my sons acquired their taste for so many different beers and libations.( haha) It was at Scottish festivals. Anyway, I enjoy listening and look forward to future episodes and so does my dog!

You Guys Are Awsome!

I've been piping for nearly 19 years, much of the time I've felt like there was nothing out there for lower grade guys, certainly not information that applied to me. I listen to the three of you and have ah ha moments, one after another! Currently I've taken the PM position of my local band so your show is full of invaluable information, keep it up. By the way I agree with the views of wearing the kilt discussed in the Black Watch Podcast. You dynamic is Awesome, you have a great show!
