#597 Is The Economy Actually… Good?
Sami and Amanda catch up after a long holiday weekend before unpacking what we know about the Omicron variant. How much of the alarm is legitimate and how much is manufactured? They have a broader conversation about how the new variant highlights how far we are from a pre-pandemic norm. Then, they discuss Americans’ dissatisfaction with the economy despite data suggesting a healthy recovery. They explain how inflation and supply chain issues vary in impact, why everyone’s “economy” is different, and how President Biden can change the vibes.
#596 Peak Millennial Nostalgia
Alise, Bryan, and Amanda chat for a special holiday episode dedicated to the recent surge of millennial nostalgia. They consider how this wave of reboots, revivals and retrospectives differs from normal trend cycles and why 30-somethings might be gripping onto these past comforts. Finally, they discuss which day in the early 2000s they’d choose to relive.
#595 Thanks, Target
Alise and Milly react to two pieces of news today ahead of Thanksgiving. They start off with the announcement that Target will no longer be open on Thanksgiving Day, after their CEO finally realized that workers would rather be at home with their families. They also discuss the resignations of a couple of Fox News correspondents over Tucker Carlson’s latest series on the insurrection, controversially titled ‘Patriot Purge.’
#594 View From The Eye Of The Storm ft. Rep. Adam Schiff
Sami and Amanda sit down with Rep. Adam Schiff for a therapeutic conversation about processing the Trump years in light of the congressman’s new book. Schiff shares the surreal experience of being the focus of Trump’s bullying, from getting recognized in the streets and during a literal insurrection to how his family had fun with Trump’s host of nicknames. Finally, he shares some choice words for former Vice President Mike Pence, details the House’s steps to ensure accountability for the insurrection thus far, and tells us who should play him in a movie about the Trump administration
#593 Dangerous Man Gets A Time Out
Milly, Alise, and Amanda react to yesterday’s House censure of Rep. Paul Gosar and how it reflects the degradation of the national government. They pivot that into a broader conversation about why men in power repeatedly fail to acknowledge the consequences of their speech -- from Dave Chappelle’s transphobic special to Paul Gosar threatening AOC to Donald Trump’s incitement of the insurrection, and how this trickles down in all areas of society — but for men only.
#592 Kamala Harris Gets A Performance Review
Sami, Kaitlin, and Amanda react to two headlines related to the far-right and reflect on the judge’s insane behavior at the Kyle Rittenhouse trial. Then they pivot to this week’s flood of negative news articles about Vice President Kamala Harris and her working relationship with the White House. We discuss: Is this criticism fair? Is it still sexist? Who is responsible for the vice president’s success? Why isn’t Joe a better boss? And what does this all mean for 2024? We process it all
Easy to listen to yet super informative
Pandemmy besties! The Sup stays optimistic without being flippant & informs without undermining the listener. Amanda Kaitlin & Sami keep everyone honest/ on their toes then Milly Alise & Bryan make me *legit* laugh out loud, by myself, multiple times every week Further reading: If I had to listen to one podcast for all my news it would be between this and NYT’s The Daily. If I wanted to avoid sobbing on my “commute” then I’d pick The Sup - The Daily is great but sometimes it’s just too much devastation first thing in the morning.
Finding harder and harder to listen to
I have long loved this podcast, but I find myself picking and choosing episodes based on who is on that day. I love Milly, Alise, Brian and when Chris Burns comes on I celebrate. But i’m finding it harder and harder to relate to / sit through the harsh, tone deaf and honestly exhausting rants that Kaitlin and Sami go on. I think both women are very smart and clearly passionate, but I do feel as though the idea of “CSPAN meets the group chat” is lost when they are on - I miss the days where I knew I could listen and laugh every day, not feel like i’ve just been scolded for 45 minutes straight.
The Ritual ads comparing the gender wage gap to the “Vitamin D gap” are insulting to women. I really wanted to like this woman-run podcast - but, combined with clueless takes on plenty of issues, I’m headed back to Pod Save America.
