Feminist Noir Author Halley Sutton on Her Novels “The Lady Upstairs” & "The Hurricane Blonde"
Today’s guest is feminist noir crime writer Halley Sutton. She wrote the first draft of her debut novel, The Lady Upstairs, while getting her MFA at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. So we got into the pros and cons of MFAs for writers. And we also talk book #2 and how that's different since Halley’s currently in the home stretch with her second novel, The Hurricane Blonde. Halley shared how Pitch Wars helped her first book find its footing, how she turned a rejection letter into an agent, the importance of a midpoint, and other sage advice for fledgling writers. Love her speaking voice and topics
Listened to my first episode today based off a video I saw on YouTube. Absolutely loved the episode and I’m not even a writer! Only downside was that the episode was a short version of what’s available on YouTube. I personally prefer podcasts while driving as I can’t watch a YouTube video. Hopefully future episode are full length
The Perfect Amount of Shared Pain!
I haven’t publicly shared this with anyone yet but I decided to write my Lizzie Borden book based on my Substack hypothesis and podcast series so keep it to yourself, lol. 🌹 This is the perfect amount of shared pain that I need to keep myself from feeling so alone during the process. 💜

There's a ton of book pods out there, but even after just a few episodes, Courtney Kocak has carved out a niche for herself. She's funny, and occasionally potty-mouthed and irreverent -- and really smart about writing. There's frequently great banter between host and guest. And I love the fact she focuses a lot on memoir and essays too (my favorite forms). Excited for new episodes!!!
