We are only in charge of writing our own stories, with Shelley Rodriguez from Hope for the Warriors
In today’s episode Sarah chats with Shelley Rodriguez of Hope for the Warriors.
Sarah first met Shelley at an in-person veteran caregiver wellness workshop in Virginia. Shelley was part of the amazing team pouring into veteran caregivers, helping them take a day of rest for themselves, and to have a time out from dealing with all the ways war had come home.
Shelley is a Texas native and has worked for Hope for the Warriors since 2012, when she was hired to develop and implement the family reintegration program. Since that time she has worked as a regional social worker and is currently the program director of Critical Care Coordination, the largest distributor of direct financial assistance and case management services within clinical health and wellness.
Shelley is married to Col. Cesar Rodriguez, of the United States Marine Corps of Summerville, Texas. They have two children: Isabell, who is 24 and married to Marine Sergeant Andrew Wormington, and continuing her graduate education; and Isaac, who is 20 and is attending college in Arkansas and playing basketball.
In this episode we chat about:
Building a career despite multiple military moves
Sometimes you can do all the things, just not all at once

Healing through sharing your story
Exercise as a coping strategy
How to stay positive when helping people when there are never-ending needs

Recovering from trauma and PTSD takes courage butit’s 100% possible, with Chris & Rahnella Adsit (Episode 7)
In today’s episode Sarah chats with Chris and Rahnella Adsit, the writers behind the Combat Trauma Healing Manual and When War Comes Home.
Chris and Rahnella Adsit have been serving Christian nonprofit programs for forty years. They served with Cru, Athletes in Action, Cru Military, and founded Branches of Valor International, a nonprofit serving military and first responder families whose lives have been touched by service-related stress and trauma.
Branches of Valor facilitated small, weekly group meetings called Rally Point Groups, where members developed a sense of family, trust and mutual support, to help each other connect with God and heal their mind, body and soul after trauma. In 2017, Chris and Rahnella merged Branches of Valor with Reboot Recovery, an organization also focusing on helping military and first responder families, so they could increase their impact together.
Rahnella is now Reboot's International Director and Chris is their National Resource Coordinator. They've authored several books, including the Combat Trauma Healing Manual and When War Comes Home workbook, both of which had life-changing impacts on both Sarah and John. Plus, the First Responder Healing Manual, among others.
They live in Eugene, Oregon, where they have raise four children, including an Afghanistan war veteran, a wildland firefighter and the wife of a Marine Major.
In this episode we chat about:
How the Combat Trauma Healing manual came together through Cru Military
Recovering from a 100% disabled PTSD status
Healing from trauma takes great courage, but it's possible
Letting our lives be ruled by love, not fear
The more you choose love over fear, the easier it gets
