I have been on a mission to learn ways to get healthy in mind, body, and spirit ever since my diagnosis of ovarian cancer in the spring of 1998. This podcast came out of my desire to show you the incredible blessings and opportunities that can come out of the cancer experience. All you need is to expand your mind to what’s possible when you take your power back when it comes to your health. Episodes include conversations with health experts, thought leaders, authors and survivors who have made helping others their life’s work. Together, we will explore up to date research, tips and tools for healing from cancer, along with stories of hope, triumph and resilience.

Kathy Guisti | Navigating Cancer in a Broken Healthcare System

Over 25 years ago at age 37, Kathy was given the news that she had 3 years to live due to a diagnosis of a rare blood cancer. But Kathy, a self-described “impatient patient,” turned her death-sentence into a decades-long crusade. Not only did she save her own life; she’s gone on to disrupt and galvanize our deeply broken healthcare system and transform care for millions. She founded the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), has worked with three U.S. presidents, was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, and one of Fortune magazine’s 50 Greatest Leaders in the World.
Now in her soul-baring, empowering book FATAL TO FEARLESS: 12 Steps to Beating Cancer in a Broken Medical System, Kathy delivers a playbook for any patient, survivor, or caretaker to take ownership of their wellbeing and maximize the chances of survival.
During our conversation, Kathy shares what led to her diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma, how her background prepared her for what was to come, how she advocated for insurance coverage of a drug she believed would help her, the decision to become pregnant eight months after her diagnosis, the blessing of her twin sister being her stem-cell donor, what she recommends asking for when doing a diagnostic workup, how people can learn which tests are appropriate to optimize their treatment plan, and the important lesson she learned about caregiving when her twin sister was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Carlos Baker | Thriving After Childhood Cancer

Carlos Baker | Thriving After Childhood Cancer

Carlos Baker is a songwriter, musician, author, father of 4, ex-pat and survivor of childhood cancer and adult depression.

Having spent his entire life saturated both in music and writing, his band C.K. Baker Band has released their sophomore album, Find your Way. Carlos’s gift as a songwriter comes alive as an alternative rock sound, a compelling combination of styles from classic rock, rhythm and blues, folk, and soul. By melding hook-filled melody within unexpected chord changes, his lyrics and vocal delivery showcase his ability and willingness to be completely honest in baring his emotional soul to the listener.

Carlos is also the author of Songs for Ivy, a love story of hope and resilience. Inspired by his personal tragedies of childhood cancer and having his leg amputated above the knee at the age of 14, this fictional novel is a touching and enlightening perspective on the complexity of the human soul and experience.

During our conversation, Carlos shares the amazing way he handled his diagnosis of Osteosarcoma at the age of 12, and eventually the loss of his leg, the incredible story of his miraculous healing prior to surgery to remove one of his lungs, how underlying shame manifested for him in his early 30’s, what led him to finally get help for his depression, and how his life completely changed after moving to Germany and raising his children.
