Broadway Intimacy Director Claire Warden on Returning to the Rehearsal Room

Claire Warden works as an intimacy coordinator and consultant on numerous television productions under various studios including HBO, Hulu, Amazon, Showtime, as well major motion picture studios such as Sony and 20th Century Fox. She recently made history as the first intimacy director on a Broadway production, for Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, with Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon and has since worked on numerous other Broadway shows, including Slave Play, Jagged Little Pill, The Inheritance and Company. In the 2020 season, Claire was awarded a special Drama Desk award for "her pioneering work as an intimacy choreographer... and her leadership in the rapidly emerging movement of intimacy direction”
In this episode of The Comeback Project, we speak with Claire about the challenges facing theatremakers as we return to the rehearsal room after over a year. We candidly discuss how we as directors can make space for the challenges we have all collectively faced during the Covid-19 pandemic and how we can be a conduit of change within our industry.

Are you one of the many theatermakers around the world attempting to make--or perform in--outdoor productions for the first time this summer? This panel, featuring American theatermakers who are pioneers in creating outdoor productions during the pandemic, focuses on sharing best practices around both outdoor productions and audience health + safety. From our panelists, we'll learn about how they and their colleagues effectively and artistically created--or are planning to create--outdoor happenings, what new elements they've had to contend with, and thoughts for theatermakers looking to follow suit.
