#26 - These Earbuds Raised Almost $2M On Indiegogo

#26 - These Earbuds Raised Almost $2M On Indiegogo

If you’re having a rough day, try turning up your favorite playlist. Music can help regulate your mood, cheering you up or comforting you when you’re down. This is essential when you’re running your own business: your mood can affect your decision-making, and your team will notice if you’re feeling “off.”

Picking out a great pair of headphones will do your songs justice, and you’ll need a pair of true wireless earbuds to take your tunes on the go. The xFyro ARIA True Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds use the most advanced audio technology for great listening on the go.

These buds are an Indiegogo success story — they raised a whopping $1.9M on the crowdfunding site. What makes a pair of headphones special enough to raise all that cash? It’s next-generation sound that’s tuned to perfection by sound engineers, plus an extra-long playtime of 32 hours and a charging case that adds an extra 24 hours of listening to your headphones.

The waterproof, dustproof true wireless earbuds use cutting-edge Bluetooth 5.0 technology to keep you connected at the gym, on the trail or on the way to work. You can start listening as soon as you put them on thanks to auto-pairing, and ambient noise cancellation shuts out distracting sounds.

The xFyro ARIA True Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds usually cost $250, but you can grab a pair right now for only $99 (60 percent off).

Ep. 25 -- Why TikTok Is More Important Than You Think

Ep. 25 -- Why TikTok Is More Important Than You Think

I’ve been watching the TikTok app (formerly Musical.ly) closely for a few years now and I’ve seen its progression.

TikTok is an app that allows you to create and share short videos, usually featuring music in the background. At the time of this writing, it’s a top-15 free app on the App Store with massive adoption worldwide (especially India and Asia).

In the recent months, I’ve started to get more and more active on TikTok because I believe in its potential - even though it's still early.

I see it as much, much more than just little kids dancing and lip syncing on their phone.

    1. TIKTOK’S APP IS “TRAINING WHEELS” FOR FUTURE INFLUENCERS AND CONTENT CREATORS

TikTok provides a framework that makes it easier for people to create — especially if they don’t know where to start.

And these creators are starting younger than ever before.

But the fascinating part is, TikTok is making it easier for them to become content creators. It 1) allows them to create content that they would not otherwise be able to make as easily on their own, and 2) gives them a framework they can play or create within.

For example, the TikTok app gives people tools like filters, control over video speed, access to professional audio and more. Even if you’re not the best lip-syncer, you can still create something fun on TikTok with a music background.

It’s similar to what Instagram did for photography — through filters and other photo editing settings, Instagram made it easier for people to create and distribute photos.

    2. THEY’VE CAPTURED A NEW DEMOGRAPHIC

TikTok’s success with younger audiences reminds me a lot of Facebook and Snapchat. Facebook first started as a college-only platform and later gained popularity in other age groups. Snapchat did something similar by capturing a younger demographic first, then aging up.

Snapchat captured the “tween” and teenage audience because it understood two factors that are very important when it comes to teens: (1) it’s not cool to hang out at the same place as your mom and (2) you want to lock your room.

Like Facebook, Snapchat’s app and strategies eventually started to skew older and become more appealing to a much larger demo. Like every platform, TikTok will eventually do the same.

Think about when Facebook turned into “your mom’s” app. In many ways, TikTok is making Snapchat “someone’s older brother’s app” and owning an even younger gateway.

But even though it skews younger, it wouldn’t be smart to ignore it. Because eventually, it will age up.

    3. IT COULD PAVE THE WAY FOR OTHER PLATFORMS THAT GIVE CREATORS A FRAMEWORK TO “CREATE”

I’m fascinated by apps that act as “tools.”

A big part of Instagram’s value came from the fact that it made it “easier” for people to become photographers. It gave people the option to take pictures from their mobile device, edit it, and share it with friends. Instagram started by building something that was a utility, and then became a social network after building that initial audience. They started by building an app that people could us to express themselves first.

TikTok could be an interesting preview of other platforms that could provide people with a framework to create.

For example, what about a platform that makes it easy to express yourself through written content, or other types of content that haven’t been touched by Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok?

I’m fascinated by other apps that could act as utilities first, and then build a social network on top of it.

I’m testing, learning, and becoming a practitioner. Ultimately, if you want to reach teenagers (or younger demos) in America or Asia, TikTok could be a really interesting way to do it.

#24- Bose Noise Cancelling Earbuds 500

#24- Bose Noise Cancelling Earbuds 500

Like the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, the Earbuds 500 are enabled with Bose AR, the company's audio-augmented reality platform. They'll also have touch controls, a feature the SoundSport Free doesn't have, and access to Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. A Bose rep also told me that they'll have stereo audio when you're making calls (the
SoundSport Free has mono audio for calls). Apart from that, little else is known, including what their price will be, although hopefully it will be the same as the SoundSport Free ($200).

I didn't get a chance to try on even a prototype of Bose's other
upcoming true wireless earphones, Noise Cancelling Earbuds 700, which, as their name implies, feature active noise-canceling and may share some intriguing new features found in their over-ear sibling. They're slated for a 2020 launch.

    TDSP #22 -- Samsung 8K TV

    TDSP #22 -- Samsung 8K TV

Everyone loves a good deal on a good TV, but how about an insane deal on an insane TV? We got wind of a Massdrop exclusive sale on a Samsung TV so new it's not even available at many popular retailers yet, let alone for any sort of discount.

This TV is 82 inches, has a QLED screen (which is comparable to OLED but more expensive), and offers 8K clarity. In a world where 4K is becoming the new standard, it makes sense Samsung would already be looking forward to the next step up, but this also comes with a hefty price tag of $10,000. Yep, you read that right. But if you get in on this Massdrop sale, you can save $3,000 and pick one up for just $7,000. What a steal!

What makes this TV so great?

I spoke with our resident TV expert, Lee Neikirk, to see what he thinks about the TV. Lee has tested thousands of TVs over the years, so I was thrilled when he said Samsung's QLED game is strong enough already that even without testing it he is confident it's amazing.

"I think the QLED line has been getting better for a few years and it has the swagger to pull off that size of TV without blemishes or loss of quality," he told me.

The Q900 has a bunch of great features beyond being gigantic and beautiful to watch. It works with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, has a Bixby-driven smart TV platform built right in, has an Ultra HD picture for deeper blacks and brighter whites and colors, and lets you enable ambient mode so your TV transforms into a living work of art when it's not being used. It also has four HDMI ports, three USB ports, and an ethernet port. The TV is massive, and it weighs 110-112 pounds (the stand adds an extra 2 pounds), so keep that in mind if you want to mount it on a wall.

Do you need an 8K TV?

Honestly, no one NEEDS 8K yet. No one even films anything in 8K yet. Maybe they never will. But if you've got $7,000 burning a hole in your pocket, why the heck not go for it? The massive size of the screen, according to Lee, is actually ideal for 8K content, if and when people start making it. And Samsung claims to up-convert content to be as close to 8K as they can get it, which sweetens the deal a bit.

So if you want to get ahead of the game, or you just want that flex when your friends come over, this could be your chance. The sale runs through April 8, and the TVs will ship on April 23 (well worth the wait for that savings). And you do have to create a Massdrop account to access the deal, but it's free so it won't cut into your over-the-top TV budget.
