Know the strength and weakness of each team member

Focus on the outputs and recognize each team member's achievement

Read the Room or Do What You Were Told?

Episode 730 - Read the Room or Do What You Were Told?

Over the weekend I had to run the clock for the High School Football playoffs. Since it was my first time, I was a little nervous. The white hat (referee) told me to do add three minutes after the ten-minute halftime.  As halftime expired I noticed both teams were ready to play and the officials were ready to officiate. Yet, the referee told me to add three minutes to the end of the ten-minutes. I ignored my instinct (reading the room) and added three minutes. The referee waved his hands and furiously shook his head so I put ten minutes up for the third quarter to start.  I read the room which contradicted what I was told. When faced with this type of situation, always lean towards doing what you were told.  Even when the room screams otherwise.

A comical story about miscommunication from the book, Everyone Communicates Few Connect, by John C. Maxwell.  Sometimes miscommunication can come from the wrong assumptions.  After hearing the story about unopened cookies can you relate? I sure can.

How many of you put so much emphasis on a particular day. Like your birthday, anniversary, or special moment you like to celebrate. One of the strengths that my wife and I have is we treat each and every day with the same value. Every day is just another day. This allows flexibility when something comes up, especially if it shows we are serving them. Shoot, I didn't get to celebrate my 50th birthday because of COVID. I may celebrate it when I'm 52 in February . . . because it's just another day. The celebration is what's important.

In my opinion, those who say happiness is overrated don't fully understand what it means to be happy. Happiness doesn't eliminate suffering, in fact, happiness helps you endure suffering.  Since happiness cannot exist with worry, it eliminates worry. The common theme in the articles I read claiming happiness is overrated was the pursuit of happiness. I agree with them. Pursuing happiness is not how one becomes happy.

Have you ever been prepared for something that you thought would go well and you fell flat? Maybe you were over-thinking it or maybe you just didn't have it. Those things are normal. What's not normal is getting up, shaking it off, and moving forward.  That's what champions do. They take setbacks as temporary and bounce back quickly.
