Too Long Between Episodes

I’m wondering if they stopped what was a good show. Too long since last episode. The one where they just interviewed people not involved in case but with opinions, why? Started great and worth a listen.

Less Journalism Than Wikipedia Entry

This podcast, which I initially thought would be GREAT like Bear Brook, is actually pretty terrible. Two stars is generous, despite the alluring first few minutes. The constant and intrusive ads are a problem, yes, but the REAL problem is that this is just a six-hour-long (ad-laden) recitation of the bare facts of the case. (Not even all of those, actually.) There is no real journalism here whatsoever. NOT ONE SINGLE INTERVIEW. No one but the two narrators ever speaks. No interviews with family, friends of either victims or killer. No interviews with Dating Game producers, contestants, backstage staff who met and interacted with the killer. No interviews with any of his commanding officers or fellow enlisted men from his short stint in the military. No interviews with his colleagues at the summer camp for girls or at the L.A. Times. No insights from his school friends, his girlfriend or his sisters. No background information whatsoever on the killer! I had to read the Wikipedia entry to get any sense of who this guy really was, or even to find out his real name, much less that he was of Hispanic descent and was abandoned by his father in Mexico as a little kid. Absolutely unbelievable. The story itself is fascinating; the podcast makes it flat and dull.

And don’t even get me started on the mess that is the totally unrelated “Conversation” about serial killers generally in Episode 7. Blecch. Just skip this whole flat boring fiasco masquerading as journalism and read the Wikipedia entry and then watch Rodney Alcala’s Dating Game appearance on YouTube. Much more information in less than 15 minutes total time.
