We love our superhero stories, and it's been pretty cool to see the genre make its way from comic books and film/TV to the book world. We've been obsessed with the Renegades series by Marissa Meyer, who you may recognize from her Lunar Chronicles series, which reimagines classic fairy tales into speculative fiction settings. Renegades is set in a world that is ruled by superpowered individuals called, um, Renegades. The Renegades took control after a period of disorder during which the Anarchists, this world's "supervillains," had power.

In The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club series, Theodora Goss takes the most famous of 19th-century monster tales and turns them on their heads, making the female monsters of the narratives (or the female monsters from the spaces between the canon) into the protagonists of their own story.

Britta Lundin's young adult novel debut Ship It is the story of Claire, a teenager who writes gay fanfiction about her favorite show, Demon Heart. When Claire attends a fan convention, she meets Forest, one of the two stars of Demon Heart and our other Ship It narrator. Lundin's status as a writer on the CW's popular Riverdale series puts her in a unique position as an author of such a story.
