183 - Revolutionizing the Commercial Space Industry with Tom Marotta of The Spaceport Company

Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we are excited to share the journey of Tom Marotta, the Founder and CEO of The Spaceport Company, has a unique background in urban planning, the aerospace industry, and regulatory bodies. With a career spanning over two decades, Tom has worked in various roles, including city planning, foreign service, and commercial space transportation. His experience has prepared him well to tackle the challenge of building launch pads for rockets on ships.Tom's entrepreneurial journey began when he failed to find suitable launch pads at a rocket company. Recognizing the growing demand for launch pads exceeding the supply, Tom leveraged his skill set to start The Spaceport Company in 2022.  The company has made significant progress over the past three years. The space industry is booming, with an estimated global value of hundreds of billions of dollars. The demand for data services from space, such as GPS, financial transactions, and weather forecasting, drives this growth. However, the US has only four spaceport facilities, with a fifth exclusive use facility owned by SpaceX, which is not available to other companies. This limited capacity has led to satellite companies looking overseas for launch opportunities. To address this issue, The Spaceport Company aims to build more spaceport capacity by creating launch pads on ships. Tom and his team scoured the globe for land to build a spaceport but found it too expensive and difficult due to environmental concerns. Instead, they will operate the spaceport at sea, modeled after the successful Boeing's Sea Launch Project, which launched 36 times before being discontinued due to geopolitics.Tom Marotta's entrepreneurial journey and innovative approach to building launch pads on ships have the potential to revolutionize the space industry. By addressing the shortage of launch pads and increasing access to space, The Spaceport Company is poised to play a significant role in the growing global space market. 178 - The Storm Before the Harvest with Joe Cody of Grain Fertility

Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we feature Joe Cody, the Founder of Grain Fertility, a care coordination and fertility patient navigation service.  Grain Fertility aims to support patients undergoing fertility treatments and clinics by providing patient empowerment coaches, a secure application to organize treatment information, and guidance on navigating the complex process. The service is led by medical professionals who translate complex medical information into understandable language, making fertility treatment information accessible to patients. Joe Cody grew up in St. Louis, fascinated by weather and science from a young age. He wanted to be a meteorologist, but opted instead for a degree in political science. This led him to work on Capitol Hill. Joe's childhood fascination with weather began when he witnessed a tornado in person in first grade. He still enjoys weather-related activities as a hobby. Interestingly, his interest in weather started at a young age, after which he co-founded Grain Fertility, employing a complex analytical approach to making fertility treatment information understandable and accessible to patients. As Joe's background in politics and health policy came into play, he recounted his experience on Capitol Hill. His interest in fertility began after he got married and started trying to have kids. He discovered that infertility is common, expensive, and time-consuming, and was required to seek treatment from a reproductive endocrinologist. Ultimately, he and his partner had to use in vitro fertilization (IVF) to conceive, which was an overwhelming process due to the amount of information, finances, and emotional and physical impact on both partners. Grain Fertility's approach to fertility treatment information is unique, employing patient empowerment coaches, a secure application, and guidance on navigating the complex process.  Infertility is a common, expensive, and time-consuming process, requiring patients to seek treatment from a reproductive endocrinologist.  The emotional and physical impact of IVF on partners should not be underestimated, highlighting the need for patient support and guidance throughout the process.
