153 - A Holistic Approach to Weight Loss with Dr. Minnie Cruz-Tolentino of My Wellness Physicians

153 - A Holistic Approach to Weight Loss with Dr. Minnie Cruz-Tolentino of My Wellness Physicians

Excited to introduce Dr. Minnie Cruz-Tolentino, the Founder and Medical Director of My Wellness Physicians, a weight loss clinic in Leesburg, Virginia on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla this week. Dr. Cruz-Tolentino's unique approach to weight loss combines physical health with chronic issues and patient goals, providing a holistic solution for those seeking a healthier lifestyle. We will delve into her personal background, cultural heritage, and experiences as a Filipino doctor living in the United States.

Dr. Cruz-Tolentino's childhood was marked by her move from the Philippines to Connecticut at the age of 8. She lived with her grandparents, who taught her to speak Tagalog fluently, a skill she still uses today. Her grandparents' conservative upbringing had a significant impact on her life, shaping her values and perspective. Dr. Cruz-Tolentino's husband, also Filipino, often teases her about her language skills, and she has three daughters, including a 21-year-old senior in college.

Dr. Cruz-Tolentino's family has faced its share of challenges, including the time her husband got a job in Connecticut while she was in residency in upstate New York. They navigated a long-distance relationship, with Dr. Cruz-Tolentino's husband driving from Connecticut to Utica every Friday and back on Sundays for three years. When she finished her residency, they moved to Maine, where her husband did consultancy work before joining her in her residency program. Their experiences in Maine and later in Virginia have been filled with triumphs and lessons learned.

As the founder of My Wellness Physicians, Dr. Cruz-Tolentino's clinic takes a holistic approach to weight loss, considering the interconnectedness of physical health, chronic issues, and patient goals. Her experiences with medical missions in the Philippines have given her a unique perspective on healthcare and a desire to continue making a difference in the future.

152 - 3rd-Generation Contractor with David Stocks Jr. of Stocks General Contractors

152 - 3rd-Generation Contractor with David Stocks Jr. of Stocks General Contractors

In this engaging interview on The DMV Business Show, host Otto Sevilla talks with David Stocks, Jr., President and CEO of Stocks General Contractors, a company out of Virginia that specializes in underground utility construction, water lines, sewer, and storm drains,
as well as electrical and communications work. Born and raised in the DMV area, David comes from a family with a 3rd-generation construction background. His father, David Sr., worked for various companies and also had his own company.

David's childhood was spent playing on construction sites, observing his father's work, and helping out with small projects. Despite initially not wanting to follow in his father's footsteps, David began to develop an entrepreneurial spirit, starting his own lawn mowing business and eventually running his own company. He credits his parents, who were both entrepreneurs, for instilling in him a strong work ethic.

David's career path is marked by an unconventional transition from construction to military service. He served in the US Army for 4 years, working in military intelligence and as a ground station operator, traveling between different bases in the continental US. After his military service, David considered pursuing IT or government contracting but ultimately decided to help his father's construction company grow, despite having a different business approach.

David worked with his father's company for a while but their styles clashed, and he eventually decided to pursue his own construction career. It took him a year or two to figure out what he wanted to do, during which time he worked at an electrical contractor and realized that wasn't his passion. Eventually, he landed a job in underground utilities, working on vac trucks and identifying underground utilities. He worked for a company for a while and then left to start his own business, founding Stocks General Contractors.

Remember that leadership is not just about the title or the role but about the values and principles one embodies. David Stocks Jr.'s journey serves as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging others to pursue their passions, take calculated risks, and strive for greatness. His entrepreneurial spirit and unconventional career path have led him to success in the construction industry.

151 - From Finance to CEO with Robert Dowling of West 4th Strategy

151 - From Finance to CEO with Robert Dowling of West 4th Strategy

Welcome to the Season 4 Premier of The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla and our featured guest Robert Dowling, President and CEO of West 4th Strategy as he shares his inspiring journey. Robert was born and raised in the DMV (DC-Maryland-Virginia) area. Growing up, he developed a passion for sports, particularly golf, and was influenced by his father's experiences in the restaurant business. His mother, who was instrumental in managing the family's restaurant, sparked his interest in the operational side of things. Robert's first job was as a bank teller at First Virginia Bank (now part of Wells Fargo) during his senior year of high school, giving him an early taste of the finance industry.

Robert went on to pursue a double major in finance and management at Virginia Tech, with the goal of becoming a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). He discovered that many CFOs came from an accounting background,
which initially deviated from his own focus on finance. After graduating, he earned his master's in finance at Boston College. Robert's work experience began with KPMG's structured finance group in Tysons, Virginia, where he modeled mortgage-backed securities for investment banks in New York.

When the financial crisis hit in 2008, Robert's team at KPMG was reassured by their partners that their jobs were safe. However, Robert, having been aware of the market's volatility, decided to start looking for a new job. This experience shaped his opinion that a CFO should focus more on strategy rather than accounting, and that a good controller is essential for a company.

Robert joined a startup investment bank, Kipps DeSanto, after being approached by a headhunter. He worked in sell-side investment banking and advisory for government contractors for 11 years, starting as an analyst and eventually becoming a vice president. During this time, he
gained valuable experience in the industry, finance, accounting, and executive management teams. Robert enjoyed the diversity of his role, which required him to be a jack-of-all-trades, understanding various industries and interacting with CEOs, presidents, and CFOs.

After 11 years at KippsDeSanto, Robert decided to leave the company without another job lined up. He cited a desire to explore other opportunities in the industry and returned to his network, eventually landing a job at General Dynamics IT, which had acquired CSRA.

Robert's career path eventually led him to President and CEO of West 4th Strategy, a company he describes as unique due to its focus on federal government services. With over 120 employees across the US, Robert's company is dedicated to providing professional and IT service support to federal agencies.

150 - Empowering Beauty And Business with Carla Goycochea of Masterpiece Beauty Academy

150 - Empowering Beauty And Business with Carla Goycochea of Masterpiece Beauty Academy

Beauty industry veteran Carla Goycochea, Founder and Owner of Masterpiece Beauty Academy in Rockville, Maryland shares her inspiring journey on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla this week. Carla moved from Lima, Peru to the United States at just 18 years old to attend college. She initially studied international business but soon found herself drawn to the beauty industry.

In 2005, Carla took a job as a receptionist at a high-end salon. Being immersed in the salon environment day-to-day sparked Carla's passion for hands-on beauty services. She steadily built up her skills and experience working with top stylists and eventually transitioned into performing treatments herself.

Over the next 15 years, Carla continued enhancing her expertise in services like microblading, eyelash extensions, and permanent eyeliner tattooing. She managed several upscale salons and amassed a loyal client base who raved about her talent for permanent makeup artistry. Carla shares how every client presented unique challenges that allowed her to improve her skills and precision.

By 2020, Carla felt ready to step out on her own. When COVID-19 hit and salons were forced to close, Carla saw it as an opportunity to prepare her new business venture - Masterpiece Beauty Academy. She spent the shutdown period developing her curriculum, building her website, and boosting her Instagram following. Carla wanted to be ready to hit the ground running when stay-at-home orders eventually lifted.

Carla proudly opened Masterpiece Beauty Academy, a permanent makeup and microblading training program, later that year. Despite launching during a pandemic, her rigorous preparation allowed the business to flourish. Carla began training small classes of students in techniques like microblading eyebrows, eyeliner, and lip blushing. She shared insights from over a decade of experience to help her students thrive in permanent makeup artistry.

As part of her commitment to continuous education, Carla travels frequently to Europe to take advanced training herself. She explains how improving her own skills allows her to better serve her students and stay on top of the latest industry trends. Carla also still sees select clients so she can continue honing her artistry on real skin and faces.

In addition to the academy, Carla founded Paragon Studios to support independent beauty professionals. Paragon offers rental space for artists who prefer working outside of traditional salon settings. By creating a collaborative community, Carla gives back to the industry that has given her so much.

Carla's story provides inspiration and valuable lessons for beauty entrepreneurs. Her journey from Peru to prominent business owner shows how passion, dedication and generosity can lead to success. Carla generously shares her insights on pivoting careers, continuous learning, and helping others achieve their dreams.
