the Dodcast is my podcast where I talk about things that I find interesting with people who are much cooler than I am.
I like photography, history, psychology, design, creativity, and pondering why people work they way they work, what makes them tick, and more. This podcast is very casual, but serious all at the same time.

#8 - JUSTIN JAMES MUIR - netflix, commercial photography, marketing

This is “the Dodcast” I’m your host, Nathaniel Dodson. In today’s podcast I sat down with Justin James Muir, a Philadelphia area photographer who is arguably one of the best photographers in the county. The smooth colors, the sublime use of light and shadow, the depth of field, and the location light he captures are only a few of the thing that will convince you that his work is a cut above the rest of us.
We talk a whole lot about commercial photography, working with top photographer JoeyL, working as a creative director for a big TV channel, photographing chickens with his own personal “Chicken Whisperer,” the challenges of marketing yourself as a photographer, landing magazine photo jobs, Netflix addictions, and a whole lot more in this, the eighth episode of “the Dodcast.”

#7 – MAX GRUDZINSKI - getting into photography, skiing in europe, and photographing my wedding

This is “the Dodcast” I’m your host, Nathaniel Dodson. In today’s podcast, I sat down in the kitchen with Max Grudzinski, a Philly photographer who’s become a friend of mine over the past few years. Max and I bumped into each other through a coworking space here in Philly where I was a member and we’ve just kind of stuck together ever since. I even hired him to photograph my very own wedding just a few years ago.
Max and I talk about getting into photography and how he got his start in wedding and OTHER photography and how it all goes down on the day of a wedding, the film company he works with and all their RED cameras, his passion for skiing, the dangers of the sport, and the bizarre story of when he had his fingers and toes cut off. We talk about all that, and a bit more in this, the seventh episode of “the Dodcast.”

#6 - BILL CRAMER - commercial photography, mobsters, journalism, & making more money

This is “the Dodcast” I’m your host, Nathaniel Dodson. In today’s podcast I sat down with Bill Cramer, he started a production company called “Wonderful Machine” which helps connect photographers around the world with great commercial photography jobs. Bill graduated from Penn State University and got his start doing journalistic photography and later commercial photography, only to later start a production company and apply all he’s spent his life learning to build an impressive network of photographers.
In our chat, Bill and I talk about some of the stories he’s covered in journalism: photographing mobsters, his first newspaper cover, a guy who cut off his own leg, the murder of an Olympic athlete, photographing the president of the United States, his transition into commercial photography, how Wonderful Machine works, how to charge your clients more, how to build a portfolio, and SO much more in THIS, the sixth episode of “the Dodcast.”

#5 - ALEX HILLMAN - coworking, getting it wrong, & freelancing with friends

#5 - ALEX HILLMAN - coworking, getting it wrong, & freelancing with friends

This is “the Dodcast” I’m your host, Nathaniel Dodson. In today’s podcast I sat down with Alex Hillman, an entrepreneur, a co-working expert, and a buddy of mine. Alex is a mainstay in the coworking and startup community both in Philadelphia and around world. You can check out more about Alex at dangerouslyawesome.com or at indyhall.org where you’ll find information about the coworking space we talk about here.
In our chat, Alex and I talk about coworking, what it is, how it works, and where so many people get it wrong, we talk about some of the challenges of managing a space for hundreds of small business owners. I recall a time I got blocked from coming to Indy Hall, a time that he hacked his school’s network, and one way he thought I brought value to the community when we first met. We talk about all this and much more on THIS, the fifth episode of “the Dodcast.”

#4 - DR. AMERICUS REED, II - building your brand, tedx talks, & epic workouts

This is “the Dodcast” I’m your host, Nathaniel Dodson. In today’s podcast I sat down with the powerful and legendary Dr. Americus Reed, II. I met Americus a number of years ago when he hired me to shoot a series of photos for his own personal brand and very quickly found myself fascinated with this professor, who, when compared with other professors, is best described as, a bit different… in all the right ways.
In our talk, Americus and I talk about doing the right research before developing your brand, how he teaches his students... and how they respond, we talk about the challenges of modern branding in this socially-aware environment, we chat about TED talks, YouTube RED, Men vs. Women, Black vs. White, what my own “Dad Brand” is, some of our greatest fears & phobias, and somehow slavery even gets talked about. We talk about all this and much more on THIS, the fourth episode of “the Dodcast.”

    #3 - JOE KELLY - photography for an agency & photographer/model scams

    #3 - JOE KELLY - photography for an agency & photographer/model scams

This is “the Dodcast” I’m your host, Nathaniel Dodson. In today’s podcast I visited with Joe Kelly, a model-turned-photographer who is based out of York, Pennsylvania. Joe has worked with agencies in California, Miami, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, and more and has developed a keen understanding of the industry from both a model and a photographer’s vantage point. He likes to style himself a photographer that will not only help build a model’s portfolio, but help them launch their career itself.
In our talk, Joe and I will talk about his early modeling days and a trip to Milan that humbled this brash young model, his transition into photography, the approach he takes when photographing people, some views on retouching or altering images, and a cringe-worthy comp card that got him started years ago. We talk about all this and much more on THIS, the third episode of “the Dodcast.”
This episode contains EXPLICIT language. Consider yourself warned :D
