What Remains - Episode 4 / Lu
Something flickers in and out of existence right before her eyes.
It looks like a woman standing there, head bowed, face half-hidden by coiled black hair. Sunflower steps back, pushing her sisters behind her, and at the movement the woman’s head lifts.
Fox-like eyes meet theirs head-on and Lu swears that her heart stops.
Mom. -
What Remains - Episode 3 / Stanley
The first thing to leave when the Abandonment began was the noise. Elise woke to a world without sound and, for a fleeting moment, she had worried that she had gone deaf.
There was a girl in her elementary school who had lost her hearing at ten years old and had to learn how to adapt without it.
No more music, no more scary movies or whispering secrets to your best friend through your walkie talkies late at night when it was far past your bedtime.
Just radio silence and the distinct feeling that you’re missing out on something important. -
What Remains - Episode 2 / Lu
Dinner starts a little past sundown.
The four of them crowd around their dining room table, Sunflower seated at one end and Lu on the other, bringing their hands together and bowing their heads.
Religion didn’t live in the Abandonment but their mother stressed the importance of believing in something.
So there they sat, morning and night, hands clasped and silently praying to an absent God. -
What Remains - Episode 1 / Lu
In the summer, Oakhill is hot.
The sunshine pours down from the heavens like penance; burning scorch holes into the grass and creating mirages of water on the streets.
They would have to find water, and very soon.
The four of them wouldn’t survive on these rations for much longer. -
What Remains - Prologue / Sunflower
This is a story about four sisters who are navigating a world without any other survivors. Based in Pennsylvania, the Jones sisters are left reeling in the wake of their mother's death and their father's mysterious disappearance. With no family, no community, and no world outside of their walls, they decide to uproot their lives and head to San Francisco. They have family there, or had. The Jones sisters think that they are all alone in the world, but are they really?
There is something following them. Something that moves through the shadows and seems to know all of their names. In the Abandoned Place, things are never what they seem. Listen for the cicadas song before it's too late.
What Remains is Book 1 in the Dreamer's Chronicle Series.
