Are All High School Courses Necessary? (Podcast 254)

Are All High School Courses Necessary? (Podcast 254)

I recently received this question from a homeschool mom (Rebecca) and I thought it was so good that I would share it in a podcast!

“I have listened to so many of your podcasts, and I know you believe in a very relaxed approach for the younger years. You encourage a similar approach to high school, but you work with an even stronger emphasis on owning their lives and education.

My question is, do you think all of the traditional high school courses are necessary if they’re not going to college?

If your state doesn’t require specific courses to graduate, then do you think it’s all truly necessary?”

Homeschooling a Struggling Learner Through High School (Podcast 253)

Many parents homeschool their kids because they have one or more struggling learners, but often they feel ill-equipped and inadequate for the job. They know the traditional classroom setting isn’t working, but lack the confidence they would like to have when homeschooling their struggling high school learner.

Entering the high school years as a homeschooling parent is the time when many who have average students begin to sweat bullets, but if you’ve got a struggling learner, the thought of meeting all the traditional standard criteria for high school can feel just plain hopeless.

Fear not! Today my friend Peggy Ployhar joins me to talk about homeschooling with confidence when homeschooling a struggling learner through high school!

Letting Go of the Counterfeit - Story of the Pearl Necklace (Podcast 251)

Letting Go of the Counterfeit - Story of the Pearl Necklace (Podcast 251)

Today's podcast is a mercifully short one. I share a short story that I heard years ago that begs the question: What are we hanging on to that God is asking us to let go of?

He is a GOOD God and today's short podcast is a poignant reminder of that.

Tips for Reducing Anxiety (Podcast 250)

Tips for Reducing Anxiety (Podcast 250)

In spite of the fact that I have been a believer my entire life, I have struggled with anxiety off and on over the years and still do. There are times it has been debilitating.

I’d like to say that I have overcome anxiety and never struggle anymore, but that would be a flat-out lie. However, God has given me wisdom that I can go back to over and over again whenever I am in a season of struggling with anxiety.

Today I am sharing just a few simple principles/practices that have helped me over the years and that I still find very effective.

    Scriptures mentioned:

    Hebrews 12:11

For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

    Proverbs 25:28

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

    1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

    2 Timothy 1:7

God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power of love and of self-control (self-discipline)

    John 4:18,19

Perfect love casts out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us.

    Phil 4:6,7

Be anxious for nothing but in everything with prayer and supplication WITH THANKSGIVING, let your requests be made known unto God and the peace of God that transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus”

    (James 1:5-8)

    Books mentioned:

The Sovereignty of God-AW Pink (not an easy read)

Is God Really in Control-Jerry Bridges

    Humble Roots-Hannah Anderson

The Attributes of God-Arthur Pink (When we know our God well, it is far easier to trust Him which reduces our anxiety)

    Message mentioned:

    The Sinfulness of Worry

Wonderful wisdom and encouragement

I really enjoy Durenda’s books and this podcast is icing on the cake! I love the Godly wisdom and encouragement I receive from this podcast. I often feel more confident in both my parenting and homeschooling after listening to Durenda. I also find comfort in her wisdom when things get hard as parenting and homeschooling often does. There are a wide variety of topics covered, so it doesn’t feel like you’re hearing the same thing on repeat. The shorter episodes are also nice! I often listen to them while I make dinner.
My only criticism is when Durenda invites a guest on the show. I often wish she would talk less and let the guest talk more. I want to hear what the guest has to say without her relating it to her own life all the time. Just my preference.
I recommend this podcast and Durenda’s books to all of my fellow homeschool mamas!

Highly recommended!

Love it! This podcast helped change the way I view homeschooling. I love having the freedom to be unhurried and allow my children to learn more naturally. It has helped me to be less stressed and enjoy my girls more.

Such a blessing

I read the Unhurried Homeschooler a few years back and absolutely fell in love. I knew deep down it was the message God was speaking to my heart but I was afraid to listen to that message due to the pressures of society. The book gave me permission if you will, the school and live life unhurried. I re-read it every year before we start up in the fall for school. I accidentally stumbled across this podcast not realizing the connection until listening to the first episode. It truly is the most encouraging and uplifting podcast in my lineup. Her voice is so peaceful to listen to! I crave the Godly wisdom she shares from her experience raising up and schooling her children. Can’t get enough! Also love her new book, the 4 hour school day! Thank you so much Durenda for sharing your ministry and encouragement with us moms! ❤️❤️❤️
