The Emotional Horsemanship Podcast with Lockie Phillips

I have thoroughly enjoyed many of Lockie‘s podcasts. I just finished one in particular with he and his guest Louise that I thought was such a great representation of respectful, thorough and analytical sharing between two professionals. So many great subjects that resonate strongly with me throughout all the podcast. And so many great guests!

Locke is everything the horse world is missing. In an industry that often feels rushed, image-obsessed, and disconnected from the horse, this podcast is a breath of fresh air. It goes back to the basics — honoring the horse as a partner, not just a performer. What makes Locke stand out is his honesty. He openly shares what he’s gotten right, what he’s gotten wrong, and how he’s learning through it. In the clinic, teaching, and learning space, it’s rare to find someone so grounded in true horsemanship and the fundamentals. This podcast gives me hope again.

By this point in their conversation I was nearly in tears, feeling for once so deeply affirmed in my own pursuit of ethical horsemanship the past several years that looks very much like doing a whole lot of nothing compared to the conventional and often coercive "train harder, do more" horsemanship I'd learned as a youth -- and that I too often see is still being pushed by countless professionals influencing today's ambitious young riders. If other episodes of this podcast likewise echo themes relating how modern science, kind empathy and educated feel honor our horses and yield secure horse-human relationships, then we WILL do better by horses. Highly recommend picking an episode, setting ego aside, and diving in for a worthwhile listen.
