013: How to Identify and Overcome Limiting Beliefs with Angie Brown

013: How to Identify and Overcome Limiting Beliefs with Angie Brown

In this week's episode I have brought on my dear friend and fellow coach, Angie Brown, as we discuss the power of belief systems and the astounding transformation that can occur when these are challenged.
We explore the significance of nurturing affirmative beliefs from a young age, emphasizing the power of curiosity, questioning, and critical thinking to shape identity and behavior. Drawing examples from gardening and sports, we demonstrate practical methods to break down limiting beliefs, whether in a coaching scenario or parenting.

We also unpack Cognitive Behavioral Theory – the intricate web connecting our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Rather than fixating on surface-level actions, we call for a deeper understanding of the feelings and thoughts that drive behaviors. Reflecting on the identities assigned to us by our coaches or parents, we delve into their influence on our beliefs and outcomes. We challenge the concept of a 'slump' in softball, emphasizing the power of belief shifts to enhance performance.

011: Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone, Embracing Failure, and Finding the Fun Again with Morgan Stuart

011: Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone, Embracing Failure, and Finding the Fun Again with Morgan Stuart

I am so excited to share my conversation with Morgan Stuart. She played college softball at Washington and was on the 2009 women's college world series championship team. She also played on the Philippines women's national softball team. Now she coaches full-time in California. I love that our missions are aligned in that we care about empowering the next generation of softball players with tools for confidence and knowing who they are. We talk a lot about that in this interview where she shares what she wants to instill in her athletes, how to overcome the fear of making mistakes and what it means to embrace failure through reps. We also talk about the journey to getting recruited and how unique and diverse the opportunities are despite the D1 Or bust mentality. This quote from Morgan's bio is my favorite because it perfectly sums up who she is as someone who cares deeply about the mission of growing the mental side of our game. She says: "For me, it's not only about mechanics, but also about producing valuable teammates and self reliant athletes that know how to make adjustments and how to be their best competitive selves." And that's exactly what our conversation entails.
    Episode Highlights:
Morgan's recruiting journey and what it taught herHow she overcame her feelings of inadequacy Changing the way she thinks about successHow lessons learned in softball can bless all aspects of your lifeHow failure is an important part of improving

Practical and worthy of your time

As a coach I am always looking to improve and mental skills is my latest deep dive. I thought this was just going to be another glossy podcast that leaves me wanting more but confused by what to do next. That has not been the case. I’m engaged, learning a lot, and excited to get to the next episode. Really great if you are trying to understand more about the mental side of softball and how to support your own child or a team.
