The Justice Center of Rensselaer County held a forum on Environmental Justice on Sunday, April 14 in Rensselaer. In this third and last segment of our coverage. we hear from Barbara Heinzen for the Clean Air Coalition of Greater Ravena – Coeymans and Greg Campbell-Cohen of TIMBER, who talks about lead pipe replacement in Troy. With Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

Earth Day is April 22, initiated in 1970 to focus attention on the planet’s well-being. Retired National Weather Service meteorologist Hugh Johnson spoke with Brea Barthel and Lennox Apudo about the history of this day, how the climate has changed since 1970, and policies that are connected to climate activism. They also spoke about the possibility of wild fires this summer and the weather for the week ahead.

On August 2nd 2023 Water Justice Lab visited the drinking water treatment plant and met with advocates and activists about water quality and the lead pipe issue in Troy. Community member Jona Favreau talked about her personal journey as a mother discovering her water was contaminated with lead, and how she became an activist raising her voice to make change in Troy. Before the tour, youth Science Fellow Muzzamil Moate interviewed Jona, then Emily Shusas interviewed WJL mentor Ellie Irons about what the team learned at the treatment plant.

Friday April 19 was a global day of climate strikes called for by Fridays For Future. A rally was held at the State Capitol in Albany, with a call for NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli to divest both from fossil fuels and Israel. We hear from local Friday for Future organizers Xan Plymale and Ryan Szepek, followed by local peace and justice advocate Eleanor Stein and Matt Oill of Extinction Rebellion.
