This conversation is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/xCMLYFf2ZcE (https://youtu.be/xCMLYFf2ZcE)
From sharing her director’s process as “the strategic artist” to working through a recent divorce, Jesca Prudencio implores us all to lead life with curiosity.
“I always start with a question.”
Raised by a mom and dad who supported her dreams of being in the performing arts from a young age, Jesca learned to follow her heart in order to turn those dreams into her reality. She started her career at age 5, performing Filipino cultural dances for community events. She would later grow up to travel the world to create her own media, teach and become an inspiration to her student artists. In 2021, she was named Woman To Watch on Broadway by the Broadway Woman’s Fund. *congratulatory snaps!*
Reflecting back on how she got to where she is today, she outlines how she’s learned to be patient with herself, allowing herself the time needed to contextualize her circumstances. She also emphasizes the power of community, and how in her darkest moments, they were the ones to carry her back into the light.

125: “When you find authenticity & kindness in a person, keep them close.” Drive thru balut, Filipinos in show business, and turning childhood dreams into cathartic professional opportunities with Emy Coligado

This conversation is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/xytpYt2mBMY (https://youtu.be/xytpYt2mBMY)
Dog mom, Actress and Executive Producer Emy Coligado tells her story; a girl who leaves her hometown in Borger, TX to pursue her childhood dream in the performing arts in the Big Apple. Fast forward to today, Emy has secured a decorated resume for herself including the show that inspired it all - Miss Saigon - in the Broadway company.
Bringing it back full circle, she recently finished filming and producing one of her favorite projects yet, titled ‘The Girl Who Left Home’, that features a plot emulating one of the most difficult times she’s had to face in real life: the loss of her dad. Playing the role of the nanay in a Filipino-lead film offered her a unique, cathartic opportunity to work through her grief. She dedicates this pride point in her life to her late father, and considers it an homage to her mother.
Emy shares the beauty of Filipinos in show business, and explains why the quality of your community is more important than its quantity.
Learn more about Emy and her work at https://www.emycoligado.com/ (https://www.emycoligado.com/) or catch her on Instagram/YouTube @emycoligado. Watch The Girl Who Left Home now at https://www.girlwholeft.com/ (https://www.girlwholeft.com/)
The Girl Who Left Home is an Official Selection and Encore Presentation of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Our film’s LA premiere in-person screening is at Regal LA Live on Friday, October 1st at 6pm PT. For info or tickets visit https://linktr.ee/GirlWhoLeftHome (https://linktr.ee/GirlWhoLeftHome)

Episode 066!!! 💖🙌🏽

I came across this podcast awhile ago but was in the middle of an audiobook and listening to other podcasts at the time so I didn’t press play on an episode until I saw that Adelina Tancioco was one of your guests. I got to know Adelina through a volunteer opportunity and admired her speaking and the meditations and prayers she led, but I didn’t know her story until now. Wow! I’m so much more impressed by her now. I also admire your excellent hosting skills asking great questions and adding your intelligent insights. I’m a true fan now and will be listening more often. Thanks for providing this space for amazing Pinays like Adelina to shine!

Community Found

I always felt from a very young age that I didn’t quite fit in anywhere. I couldn’t relate to the “white” kids and I always sensed I would have a different experience from all the older mestizos I grew up with. When I started college I realized that being Filipino-American was more than just a subculture. I really felt lost about who and what I was when I left home and returned. I felt like an outsider in the community that raised me. Through TFAW project, I get to hear stories from other mestizas/first gen FilAms which make me feel less alone in my life experiences and I no longer feel like there’s “something wrong” with me. I feel like I’ve finally found somewhere I do belong and that my experiences aren’t so unusual after all.
