Flying Tortuga Brothers Episode 15 - Recorded on Loggerhead Key in September of 2020 Our Guest is Jacob Kelley NPS intern

This episode recorded during the Dry Tortugas residency on Loggerhead Key.  Our guest Jacob Kelley with us on the island for part of the time.  He was an intern for the National Park Service finishing his college degree.  Jacob's job on Loggerhead was to monitor the many loggerhead turtle nests on the island, release hatchlings and keep nest data documented.  Jacob spent nearly 80 days in 2020 on the island over spanning multiple rotations and was a great resource to us about the island.

Flying Tortuga Brothers Named 2020 Artists in Residence at Dry Tortugas National Park

15 months of hard work have paid off! Carl and Shannon have been named the 2020 Artists in Residence at Dry Tortugas National Park.  In this special episode the tables are turned and the Tortuga Brothers are interviewed by Lake Worth's very own Mary Lindsey.  We talk about the application and where the idea came from as well as our thoughts about living off the grid on a 40 acre desert island with no company accept sea turtles and birds migrating south for the winter for an entire month.

FTB Bonus Episode. Year One Highlights.

This episode is a 20 minute highlight with portions of four episodes from our first year.  These four interview segments bring together what a residency is about, life as the artist resident and the the special place that is the Dry Tortugas.
Shannon and I wish to thank all of our guests on the podcast over this year for the great conversations!  We wish the demo we were sending to the National Parks Arts Foundation could be long enough to include all of you!!
We also extend a special thanks to the 5 guests from 4 episodes we did include. Mark Golden,Kelly Clark, Beth Williams, Hailey Williams and Clyde Butcher.  These conversations informed our ideas of the Dry Tortugas and made us even more certain we want to be the Artists in Residence on Loggerhead Key in 2020.

Flying Tortuga Brothers Episode 14 - Mark Golden

Well here we are at episode 14 recorded 2 weeks before our Dry Tortugas residency application is due.  I can think of no better guest to be the capstone for this part of the podcast.  We were fortunate enough through Shannon to be able to sit down and talk with Mark Golden.  Co founder and CEO of Golden Artists Colors.  Mark is not only a paint maker but also hosts a residency, The Golden Foundation Residency where 18 lucky artist a year get to go to Paint and tinker with materials  for a month at Golden Paint in Upstate NY.  Passionate about art residencies and the communities they create Mark also sits on the board of the Alliance for Artists Communities which is a resource for art residencies around the world.  We had a great conversation ranging from the history of Golden Paints to residencies and artists.  We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did getting the opportunity to talk to Mark.

Flying Tortuga Brothers Episode 13 - Beth and Hailey Williams

The Tortuga Brothers scored a great get for this week's episode!  We sat down to interview Beth and Hailey Williams.  They are the dynamic mother daughter duo chosen as Artists in Residence at Dry Tortugas National Park for 2019. Beth and Hailey are home after after spending the month of September on Loggerhead Key.  As this is the exact residency we hope to be chosen for in 2020 we were thrilled to chat and let them give us the scoop on their experiences and what we can expect if chosen to be AIRs in 2020. Beth is a pastel artist and you can find her website at http://bethwilliamspastels.com Hailey is a writer and poet.  Her works can be found at pellwrites.com  Hailey was gracious enough to share one of the poems she wrote on Loggerhead Key with us and  it is included in this episode.  We hope you enjoy listening to this interview as much as we did making it.

A biased review

Confession: I’m in love and married to one of these crazy artists and I’m only slightly less in love with the other (and his beautiful wife). But I’m also in love with their passion for pursuing art in all its messy beauty, finding the gift of grace in every moment, and giving back to all of us less aware, less creative, or less able humans. The podcast is great, but what it represents is so much greater - the realization of a dream, the adventure of a lifetime, the deep and abiding friendship of two amazing souls, and the willingness to share it all openly and freely with others. ❤️
