#97 - Justin and Miles Shaffer | Father & Son Telemark x Mile's New Position as FHL Shop Manager

#97 - Justin and Miles Shaffer | Father & Son Telemark x Mile's New Position as FHL Shop Manager

Justin and Miles are a father and son Telemark duo that have been long-time friends of Freeheel Life. Justin was one of our early customers. He luckily found us by way of some other shops that no longer wanted to carry Telemark gear and sent him to us. He dove in full-time right from the beginning of his Telemark journey and our FHL Team was there right along with him.
Miles, Justin's son, started coming to the shop with his father towards the end of high school. We talked him into trying Telemark and he soon ditched the alpine gear to go full-time into dropping knees.
Miles eventually started working at Freeheel Life three seasons ago as our Shipping and Fulfillment Agent. He moved into customer service and sales last year and has just accepted a position as the FHL Sales & Shop Manager. He'll replace Taylor Johnson who will be our new General Manager.

Mario Carr @bigskytelemark | From The Midwest to Montana

Mario Carr @bigskytelemark | From The Midwest to Montana

Mario Carr is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up skiing from a young age in southeast Wisconsin at areas like: Alpine Valley, Little Switzerland, and others. When he was still very young his parents purchased a cabin in Big Sky, Montana where he and his family would go for a few months every year to enjoy the bigger mountains of the west.
Hi exposure to Telemark skiing started when his parents learned how to drop knees out west in Big Sky, Montana and would come home to the Midwest and do it at their local hills. His parents would encourage him to try Telemark but to no avail — he just wasn’t interested. It wasn’t until he, himself, moved out to Big Sky, after high school to ski bum, that he decided to pick it up himself and started doing it full-time during the 2018-19 season.
During the past 4 seasons he began to hone his skills as a Telemark skier at Big Sky Resort. Early on he began freeheelin’ without poles, then later began using a small staff, and then during some hard snow cycles began playing around with carving. His unique approach to carving involves wider skis unlike the traditional race variety you may think of when talking about carving. He also fabricated some homemade hand pads, or “deeks” as he calls them, to allow him to lay over his turns while supporting his angulated body on these sliding hand discs.
He spent the past season as the Snow Reporter for Big Sky Resort keeping people in the loop about conditions and what’s skiing great on the mountain each day.

Today I’ve got Telemark Skier Editor-in-Chief Craig Dostie back on the podcast. I figured I had Taylor Johnson (Freeheel Life) on a few weeks ago to go over all the shop stuff, so this was the perfect time to get Craig’s take on the upcoming season too.
We talk ski passes, backcountry resorts, the death of 75mm boots in the future, and more. Things are heating up as we get ready to cool down for another great Telemark winter. Hope you enjoy the listen today friends!

Jarl Berg | Ski Bums Garage

Jarl Berg is a longtime Telemark skier from the Pacific Northwest. He grew up working at Berg’s Ski Shop which his family has owned since 1955. It was there he learned how to tune skis, fit boots, and  work in retail. During this time he was introduced to Telemark skiing during a demo at Mount Bachelor Ski Resort.
He created an organized TeleFest at Hoodoo ski area for many years, which introduced many people from the area to the Telemark Turn. His most most recent endeavor is his new business, called Ski Bums Garage, which he recently started  out of his home.
