The Froze Bros

The Froze Bros

In a Boston bar in December 2023 — over drinks that cost more than the guys usually like to spend — the concept for the Froze Bros podcast was born. Just like an actual birth, going from conception to the emergence of something hard on the ears and that friends insincerely call cute took about nine months. The resulting podcast is a comical, irreverent, yet sometimes still informative look at frozen food and drinks. Hosts Mike, who knows his way around a kitchen, Darren, who never really learned to cook, and Max, who later joined as an official Bro, talk buying, cooking, and eating frozen foods—and whatever else crosses their frozen minds. Because we’re just a little cooler. More at thefrozebros.com

    40. Jimmy Dean Blueberry Griddle Cake Sausage, Egg & Cheese Sandwiches: Something Griddled, Something New, Something Cheesy, Something Blue

The Froze Bros tackle a breakfast sandwich that pushes boundaries—blueberry pancakes instead of bread? Special correspondent Naomi shares her perfected heating method from years of Jimmy Dean fandom, while Darren accidentally experiments with cooking it in the plastic wrapper (results: surprisingly edible, questionably advisable). But first: a deep dive into the tangled corporate web connecting Jimmy Dean to Hillshire Farms, Sara Lee, Grupo Bimbo, and the Tyson empire. From buttermilk stands in Cleveland to carnival food vendors in New Jersey (real or fake?), the food industry's origin stories get the Froze Bros treatment. Plus: Hillshire Farms invades the freezer aisle, high-protein Pop-Tarts spark concern, British families save £1,100 on frozen veg, and Max tries to separate fact from fiction in "Froze Fakes"—a new game testing whether brand origin stories are real or total bullsh*t. Will mechanically separated chicken jokes ever get old? Can you freeze eggs? And most importantly: is a sandwich between two pancakes still a sandwich? 39. Face-Off: Marie Callender’s vs. Banquet Chicken Pot Pies

The Froze Bros debut a new format—Face-Off—where two brands of the same product go head-to-head in frozen food combat. First up: chicken pot pies from Marie Callender's and Banquet (both owned by food conglomerate Conagra because nothing says "fair competition" like corporate sibling rivalry). Join Darren and Max as they navigate the treacherous waters of the Connecticut coastline debate, discuss whether sauce becomes gravy at a certain volume, and attempt to call Conagra customer service after hours. Along the way, discover the fascinating history of pot pies—from ancient Greek artocreas to Victorian mystery meat. The Bros break down packaging (so much "made from scratch" talk), ease of cooking (Marie's high-maintenance foil requirements vs. Banquet's throw-it-in-the-oven simplicity), and taste (where's my peas, Banquet?). Max confesses his love for a soggy bottom, while Darren dumps his pot pie upside-down into a bowl like a barbarian. Plus: A brand new segment exploring Reddit's passionate frozen food opinions, where the Bros discover that people will absolutely fight you over Hungry Man dinners and chicken Alfredo. Jesse Pinkman had thoughts about frozen lasagna, and so does the internet. 3. 37. José Olé Mini Tacos and Taquitos: Mechanically Separated Reality

    OCT 21

    37. José Olé Mini Tacos and Taquitos: Mechanically Separated Reality

This week, the Bros travel to...well, somewhere. Spain? Mexico? Texas? Canada? All of the above? Join Darren (from the Alamo) and Max (from Barcelona’s Plaza de España) as they review José Olé Chicken & Cheese Mini Tacos and Beef & Cheese Taquitos. After talkin’ about what’s in their freezers and what they haven’t been eatin', the Bros debate the merits (and demerits) of vegan cheese while also insulting Stranger Things fans, Spaniards, and anyone who takes their frozen Mexican food too seriously. Entering la plaza for the main event, the Bros uncover the shocking truth about José Olé himself (spoiler: he's giving Trix Rabbit energy), trace the brand's wild ownership from Tyson to a 115-year-old Japanese company, and grapple with truly important questions: What exactly is mechanically separated chicken? Whose house are these tortillas baked in? And can you really enlarge a product photo to show flavor? In this week's segment, Darren takes on the TACO geography quiz: name as many countries as possible starting with T, A, C, or O in just five minutes. He misses quite a few, including our ninety-mile neighbor, which he’s actually seen (well, cruised by at least). But if we’re grading on a taco bell curve, his knowledge of world geography may be better than José Olé's understanding of flavor. So where in the world is José Olé? Amigos, write in if you find him. We’ve got a message to deliver. And half a box of tacos and taquitos.
