Episode 165: Emma Gee - Former BYU Runner - LGBTQ Athlete

Episode 165: Emma Gee - Former BYU Runner - LGBTQ Athlete

Our college years are filled with stress enough as it is. You have homework, deadlines, exams, etc. If you are an athlete, you have even more stress to go along with it as you have to add your training hours and GPA requirements to the mix.
Now, imagine you were living with a "secret" that you hadn't told anyone. A secret about who you "truly were."
Emma Gee, a former BYU Runner, became the first openly LGBTQ athlete at Brigham Young University when she came out just a few years ago.
Today she shares her story of sports and courage. We hear what it was like in her position and what it was like before and after coming out.
BYU is indeed a private university, owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and like many private schools, has an honor code they uphold. This is another topic of discussion for Emma and myself as I ask her about why she continued to go to school at BYU, knowing it was a private university with those guidelines set in place that didn't necessarily go in line with her lifestyle.
It's always great to hear new perspectives in the sports world, and I hope you enjoy our interview! We look forward to reading Emma's book when it is completed!

Episode 164: Dami Ashaye - College of Idaho Lacrosse

He started Lacrosse a little later in his athletic career. From Soccer, to Basketball, and now Lacrosse, Dami Ashaye has been winning wherever he has gone!
It's no secret that the winning culture has been part of his DNA. And now he is part of a very successful Lacrosse Program here in Idaho, with The College of Idaho.
Lacrosse at C of I may sound familiar, because we had Coach Marcel Reed on the show just two years ago to discuss the program.
Today we hear about what this program is all about, but from Dami's perspective! We will hear about the culture at the school. How the fans began to grow around the team. How the team continued to learn, year after year, ready to prove they belonged in the discussion amongst the top teams in the sport.
We also learn of what it was like from a player's perspective to have their season cut short due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Leadership comes in all different forms. You don't have to be the loudest person in the room to be a leader. TJ Edwards knows this first hand. He leads by example by bringing a winning mentality everywhere he goes!
As the Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Time Leader in Yards & TDs, TJ has been doing his thing and competing at this level for quite some time. He's been able to overcome adversity throughout his journey through football and he's shown that no matter your journey, you are always in control of taking advantage of the opportunities given to you.
In our interview today, you'll get to hear about his journey (which started at the age of 3 on the gridiron), what it was like playing high school football in Texas, what it was like going from Texas HS Football to a Division II School and then coming back to that same conference to finish up his final year of athletics.
You'll also hear what he's up to now as he prepares to make a professional roster spot! He's showing all of us that while many things are outside of our control, you can still take advantage of the opportunities that are still here.
TJ will be a major asset to any organization that picks him up. He's a proven passer with an absolute cannon for an arm, with a major pocket presence, who has the ability to move and make things happen on his feet!
Listen and enjoy the show as we get to know TJ Edwards II

    Episode 161: Paul Kingsbury - IdahoSports.com

    Episode 161: Paul Kingsbury - IdahoSports.com

The Gametime Guru Podcast is presented by 208 Printing!
    ____________________________________________
Back in 2010, I got introduction into the sports media world, when I was given the opportunity to do some Play-by-Play broadcasting with a company here in Idaho, for a local high school of ours. That company was IdahoSports.com and I'm forever grateful for the chance to learn the craft with them during that football season.
Today, I get to speak to the man who gave me that chance originally! The man who runs IdahoSports.com, Paul Kingsbury.
For YEARS he's been providing sports content to Idaho sports fans (mainly high school sports) by giving them a platform to have written content as well as game broadcasts.
He travels week in and week out to make sure he is covering the games for the schools who want them there! And today, we get to hear a lot about his journey!
We also get to hear about some fun memories he's had (like where he was broadcasting games from, since it's not always in the comfort of a press-box believe it or not), and where his favorite school is for fans and such!
He's truly built this thing and he's had to adapt along the way, which makes Idahosports.com such a great source of information for sports fans in Idaho. Listen in and enjoy the discussion!!

David Mckinzie, who is known as D-Mac, came to Boise State as a preferred walk-on as a Wide Receiver. Coming from Texas and after having a solid high school career, he was excited to come to a winning program like the Broncos.
What's awesome about his story is, although his college career may not have been exactly what he had envisioned when originally coming to play football, he took advantage of a lot of opportunities that were presented to him, and he took those skillsets he acquired to his "post-college" phase of his life!
D-Mac was fighting for a spot to play alongside some of the very best wide receivers to go through Boise State. He learned from some of the best at the position throughout his four and a half years, and today we get to hear what it was like being in his position.
It's a perfect interview for athletes who are fighting for playing time and for those looking to see what they can learn from these types of experiences. D-Mac is the true example of being a team player, putting his best work in everyday without any guarantees, but then also leveraging his network for his post-college career!
There's a reason he's crushing it as an entrepreneur these days and is doing big things to help in a lot of areas. He gets to give back at Boise State by helping with the overall in-game experience for fans at the football games (something I've experienced personally).
It's important to listen and learn from someone like D-Mac, as he's been there and knows the steps it takes to get there. So pay attention!
