Please join me as I analyze and deconstruct gaming culture as a person of color AND the culture writ large as it pertains to us. The landscape is a little different when you're not the status quo. Oftentimes we as people of color are left out of these games and society in general, and certainly left out of the conversations concerning them. While this is a gaming focused podcast, one cannot extricate the politics that impact our everyday lives from the phenomena we experience in the gaming world, and as a result we must engage, analyze and deconstruct all facets of this to better understand it. So come along with me on my journey to have these very necessary conversations and analysis not only in the gaming sphere, but within our place in this culture.

A fantastic voice in the conversation.

I’ve been an avid podcast listener since they were things I uploaded onto my MP3 player. I’ve always had a few video game podcasts in that rotation and I’ve fallen in and out of many. The Gaming Abstract is great in a lot of ways. It’s insightful and the host seems to have given the topics a lot of thought before getting in front of the mic. The format is very laid back and the once common but now rare use of subtle background music makes it a fantastic companion to that ever rarer game time. The laid back atmosphere shouldn’t make you think that the host won’t handle the heavy topics or granular conversations about how to spec your character in Monster Hunter. That’s one of the things that makes this podcast shine. The host is a very thoughtful dude who can shine a light on problematic parts of games and culture, talk about the more technical aspects of design, and the part where games can just be great. I think this is a rare gem. It’s well edited, well paced and doesn’t sound like anything else in my large podcast rotation. Pair this with a good gaming session and it will be a fantastic night!

Poignant, insightful, and relevant

Wow. This is, by far, one of the most perceptive social issues podcasts I’ve listened to. So many of the points Mook makes really resonate with my own daily, lived experiences. It’s refreshing to find that sort of affirmation, especially in the current climate. It really validates the struggle, but also provides some strength to keep going. Great job!
