    The Price of Admission

    Early voting is underway in Georgia. June 16th is coming. And The General has a briefing you need to hear before you walk into that voting booth. This week, Nikki Porcher, Air Force veteran, founder of Buy From a Black Woman, and Democratic candidate for Georgia Labor Commissioner — called Hilerie Lind personally to say thank you for the Spook at the Door episode. That call opened a conversation that became this episode. In "The Price of Admission," Hilerie breaks down what happened at the Atlanta Press Club Labor Commissioner debate, including Michi Sanchez's decision to post rap music containing the N-word on her campaign page and her defense that she didn't write it. Using her original dissertation framework, the Sacrificial Bargain, the Crooked Room, and Community Complicity, Hilerie explains why this is not just a cultural misstep. It is a disqualification. She also pulls back the curtain on the Kemp and Dooley pay-to-play scandal, tens of millions in school safety contracts, $100,000 to a political PAC, and a U.S. Senate campaign funded by taxpayer dollars laundered through a family friendship. This is the Faustian Bargain in a school safety vest. And through it all, Kanye West's "All Falls Down" as the primary text, because hip-hop already told us everything we need to know about the illusion of belonging and the price of admission.     The Sex Tape and the Architecture of Disbelief

    On May 31, 2026, a tape from Diddy's federal sex trafficking trial became public. It featured Daphne Joy, a woman believed to have anonymously testified against him. She did not choose to be in that courtroom. She did not choose to have her most intimate moments become public. She did not choose to have her body become evidence in a sex trafficking case. And within 24 hours, the father of her child went on Instagram and told the world: "She's not a victim." And the community compared her to Karrine Steffans. I was instantly offended. And I need to tell you why.

    Madame Queen: The Philosophy of Refusal in a Fur Coat.

    In 1935, a gangster named Dutch Schultz lay dying in a hospital in Newark, New Jersey. He had spent years trying to take over the Harlem numbers empire built by a Black Caribbean immigrant woman named Stephanie St. Clair. She sent him a telegram while he was dying. It read: "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." She did not beg. She did not perform grief. She did not negotiate. She named the truth and let it stand. Her name was Stephanie St. Clair. They called her Madame Queen. And she was the Philosophy of Refusal in a fur coat. In this episode, I take you back to Harlem in the 1920s, not the sanitized, Talented Tenth version you learned in school, but the full picture. The two Harlems that existed simultaneously in the same two square miles. The Harlem of the literary salons and the NAACP meetings and the respectability politics. And the other Harlem, the Harlem of the rent parties and the jook joints and the numbers racket. The Harlem that Zora Neale Hurston was writing about. The Harlem that Madame Queen was running. And I show you how both of those Harlems are alive in Atlanta right now.

    Heaux Tales

    This episode is about the body. Who owns it. Who controls it. Who profits from it when we can't say no. And what it sounds like when Black women finally refuse. I connect the RSV lawsuit to the 105th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, where the state bombed Black economic bodies into silence, and to the 1985 MOVE bombing in Philadelphia, where the city dropped a bomb on a Black radical community and killed five children. These are not isolated incidents. They are chapters in the same book. The book that says: Black bodies are raw material. Black bodies are expendable. Black bodies do not belong to themselves. I analyze Aaliyah as the foil , the Black woman who never got to refuse. Surrounded by men who claimed her body, her image, and her story from the time she was a teenager, Aaliyah died at 22 and the men who surrounded her are still telling her story for her. My dissertation framework identifies this as the Pygmalion Dynamic, success tied to a powerful male patron, and Community Complicity, when the community protects male transgressors at the expense of Black women. Aaliyah never got to write her own Heaux Tales. And that is not just a tragedy. It is evidence. And then I turn to Jasmine Sullivan. Heaux Tales (2021) is not just an album. It is a Black feminist text. It is structured like a dissertation, opening with the testimonies of real women speaking in their own voices, building to songs that reclaim Black women's right to own their bodies, their desire, and their story. "Pick Up Your Feelings" is emotional refusal. "On It" featuring Ari Lennox is the reclamation of pleasure. Together, they form what my dissertation calls the Philosophy of Refusal, the deliberate, conscious refusal of the Sacrificial Bargain in all its forms.

    Chopped and Screwed: Kevin Hart, Cheyenne Bryant, Karrine Steffans, and the Bargains That Broke the Culture

    Chopped and screwed music was born in Houston, Texas. DJ Screw took records that everyone already knew, songs they'd heard a hundred times, and he slowed them down. He chopped them up. He revealed what was hiding underneath the surface. What you thought you knew, you didn't really know. Not until you heard it slowed down. That's what this episode is. Because I need you to slow down with me. I need you to stop moving so fast past these moments that the culture keeps letting slide. I need you to hear what's really underneath the surface of what Kevin Hart did. What Cheyenne Bryant is doing. And what the community did to Karrine Steffans twenty years ago when she told the truth.

    Four Women

    "My skin is black / My arms are long / My hair is woolly / My back is strong / Strong enough to take the pain / Inflicted again and again / What do they call me? / My name is Aunt Sarah." — Nina Simone, "Four Women" (1966) In this episode, I process the outcome of the Georgia primary and what the system revealed about itself. I claim my identity as the ancestor, as Harriet and Zora 2.0, as The General. I name the pivot: I'm putting focus on myself and my businesses, I'm done dating below my paygrade, and I'm done accepting crumbs. And I expose Kim Kardashian's harm to Black culture, with verifiable sources. This episode is titled "Four Women" after Nina Simone's 1966 song, a song that tells the stories of four Black women across history, each carrying the weight of different controlling images: Aunt Sarah (the Mammy), Saffronia (the Tragic Mulatta), Sweet Thing (the Jezebel), and Peaches (the Sapphire). Nina Simone's song is a meditation on the ways Black women have been forced to carry the pain inflicted again and again. It's a song about survival, about strength, about the refusal to be broken. And this episode is my meditation on what it means to be a Black woman in 2026, carrying the legacy of those four women, refusing the Sacrificial Bargain, and claiming my identity as the ancestor.

    A Conversation with Rep. Derrick Jackson on Integrity, Black Maternal Health, and the Fight for Georgia

    The day before the Georgia Democratic primary. And I'm sitting down with State Representative Derrick Jackson, the man I've been fighting for, the man I believe in, the man who is the most qualified candidate in this race. I'm his campaign manager. I've been putting up signs, organizing events, managing his social media, writing his speeches, hosting prayer calls. I've been doing this work for months. And I believe in him. But today, I saw something that I can't shake. I saw signs for candidates—Miracle Rankin, Jen Jordan, and Rep. Derrick Jackson, ripped out of the ground and thrown on the sidewalks in predominantly white neighborhoods. I saw them laying under trees. And I got an eerie feeling. A feeling that connected me to the ancestors who watched their sons and brothers and fathers hung from trees. The signs are bodies. The trees are lynching trees. And I am witnessing, in real time, the systematic erasure of Black political power.

    The Signs as Bodies

    It's Monday, May 18, 2026. The day before the Georgia Democratic primary. And I just got back from driving around DeKalb County, placing signs for State Representative Derrick Jackson. I've been doing this for weeks. Putting up signs. Taking them down when they get vandalized. Putting them back up. This is the work. This is what it means to be a campaign manager for a candidate who is the most qualified but "not palatable enough." But today was different. Today, something happened that I can't shake. I saw the signs as bodies. I drove through predominantly white neighborhoods in DeKalb County. And I saw signs for Miracle Rankin and Jen Jordan, two women running for statewide office, ripped out of the ground. Thrown on the sidewalks. Laying under trees. And I got an eerie feeling. A feeling I can't quite name. A feeling that connected me to something deeper than this election, deeper than this campaign, deeper than this moment. It took me back, as if I were my own ancestor, watching in horror as they hung from trees.
