    Anger is our friend.
    Not a nice friend.
    Not a gentle friend.
But a very, very loyal friend.
It will always tell us when we’ve been betrayed.
It will always tell us when we’ve betrayed ourselves.
     - Julia Cameron, The Artist’s Way
Anger is a potent energy that very few men have an empowering relationship with. For many of us, it sabotages, it gnaws away at our insides, it causes us to say and do things we regret, it harbors resentment with the people we love.
There is no way we can be our best selves – our Great Man – when we have such a disempowering relationship with our anger.
And yet, anger also holds the potential to be an incredible gift…if we can learn to build our capacity to work with this powerful emotion.
When a man learns how to experience his anger without suppressing or exploding…he finds his power:
    - He speaks up for what he believes in
    - He maintains his boundaries
    - He creates safety for others
    - He resolves conflicts and dissolves resentment
A man who can work with anger in this way is trustworthy. Sexy even.
    In This Episode:
How to stop suppressing – or suppressing and then exploding – your anger Why suppressed anger leads to resentment…which in turn builds walls between you and the people you love The 4 types of messages that anger is trying to communicate to you How the “Board of Directors for your Emotions” visualization technique saved me from acting out of anger and creating 6 months of chaos in my life 3 practices to train your nervous system to handle anger more resourcefully and powerfully

    --------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to week #6 of the Building Your Best Self Series, a 13-episode mini adventure to call forth your best self as you head into 2022.
Today we are talking about Building Your Wolfpack.
In the Great Man Within community, we have a mantra: stop lone wolfing your life. The Lone Wolf is the man going through life mentally, emotionally and spiritually on his own. Lone wolves starve. Men thrive when in community with other men.
And when you embark upon this personal development journey, you may find the types of men you’re currently surrounded by can’t quite support or understand where you’re trying to go. That can cause tension in your existing relationships.
If you’re experiencing that friction already, you’re not alone. To highlight this, I ran a poll on my Instagram account this past week where I asked 4 questions (150 responses):
#1. Did your personal development journey strengthen your relationship with existing friends or cause tension?
    44% strengthened
    56% caused tension
#2. When you began your journey, did you have a friend also working on that, or did you go at it solo?
    27% friend
    73% solo
#3. Did you feel supported by or resistance from your friends?
    48% supported
    52% resistance
#4. Did you end up saying goodbye to old friendships?
    83% yes
    17% no
So, the bottom line is, as you grow, and as your priorities change it can cause friction with your existing relationships…AND it represents a powerful opportunity to consciously create the pack of men you want to surround yourself with now and into the future.
Joining Bryan and I for today’s discussion is our special guest Jay Washington. Jay is one of the most visible, vocal and influential men in our Great Man Within Communities. He’s in two of the masterminds, and appeared on episode #210 of the podcast Uncomfortable Conversations with Black Men.
    In this Episode:
3 signs you may have outgrown your friend group 3 questions to ask about the type of wolfpack you want to build 3 qualities I look for in the types of men I bring into my life

Welcome to week #5 of the Building Your Best Self Series, a 13-episode mini adventure to call forth your best self as you head into 2022.
Most of our efforts to change our behaviors, to go after what we want in life, fail.
They fail not because we lack motivation, but because changing our behaviors is the wrong place to start. We must start with changing our identity.
Your identity, who you believe yourself to be, is the single biggest driver of your actions, the goals you set, the relationships you enter, how you feel about yourself, and what you believe yourself capable of.
So the question becomes, how much of your identity have you chosen…and how much is unconscious?
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, may have a clue for us. He says:
“The word identity was originally derived from the Latin words essentitas, which means being, and, identidem, which means repeatedly. Your identity is literally your “repeated beingness.”
Said differently, the repetition of your thoughts, the repetition of your actions, the proof and evidence you’ve collected along the way forms your belief systems about yourself.
But all of those things are rooted in the past. Your present day identity is much more an artifact of the past than a conscious creation of the future. Those repeated thoughts, actions, outcomes, all happened in the past.
Which begs the question, from this point forward, who is the man you are determined to become…and what are the daily actions you will take to bring that man into being?
    In this Episode:
Why most behavior change doesn’t stick Why you need to decide who you want to become, and then relentlessly cast votes (aligned actions) every day Why you should stop focusing on the evidence/proof you’ve accumulated about your abilities and instead focus on who you want to become James Clear’s 2 step process to changing your identity A 3 step process to illuminate where identity conflict may be preventing you from behavior change

Brandon_Ritt ,

Amazing podcast!

I don’t know where I would be today without this podcast. I stumbled upon it during a dark time and listening to this from the first episode and implementing what fit in my life, helped and guided me along my own inner journey. These are the real conversations that us men need to hear. And women, but men in particular. It’s not about football or drinking but coming together as a community to be accountable as husbands, fathers, sons and better men that the world so desperately needs.

Screaming at you

Dom! I am screaming at you, brother. The podcast with Hannah D was life changing. This episode, along with books like The Way of the Superior Man, should be required material before any adult enters into a sexual union. Long time listener here and horrendously tardy in leaving a review. Big big thank you to you and Brian for making it your mission to be the rising tide that lifts all boats

I’m a woman and new super fan!

Yay! Im a woman, a coach of midlife women redefining ageing, a podcaster AND...a divorced mom of 5 sons!! I am deeply grateful that you two are doing this podcast and modeling the importance of inner work. Now if only you could get into their podcast lineup without me recommending it.... 😉☺️ THANK YOU!
